Where to live in Indy?

My husband and I might be relocating to the Indianapolis area and I was wondering, what are the better neighborhoods/suburbs? We are looking for a family friendly area that has a lot to do but not too expensive. And what areas should we stay away from (if any) and why? Thanks!!

Re: Where to live in Indy?

  • I love the Southside (Greenwood and Bargersville areas).  The southside is cheaper then the Northside for housing and still only about 20 minutes away from down town (all the museums).  Greenwood has several good parks and walking trails.
  • I've lived in Carmel (the North end) and in Greenwood (the South end). I feel there is just as much "money" in Greenwood and much cheaper. Plus people are nicer :)

  • We love Greenwood too!
  • We recently bought a house in Plainfield on the SW side of Indy.  We don't have kids (yet) but when I researched school districts in the area, Plainfield was one of the best.

  • I used to live in the Castleton area, but I now live just south of Greenwood.  There is much less traffic, and less expensive.  I do wish the Southside had a Trader Joe's, but other than that, I am happy here.  Also, Greenwood is closer to Brown County, which is beautiful any time of the year.
  • I have lived in both the Broad Ripple and Butler/Tarkington areas....both really close and similiar mid-town locations.  Very close to downtown and musuems, nice and quiet neighborhoods.  Butler/Tarkington is more family orientated and Broad Ripple definitely caters to a younger hipper crowd, but there is tons of great food, music, art, schools,  and shops! Both are pretty affordable you just have to know how to look.  I have lived here for a year and LOVE it! :) Hope this helps!
  • We have lived in Westfield and just bought a house in Noblesville. DH is from California and he loves the area we are in. This is on the north side of Indianapolis. It is Hamilton County and other suburbs in this area are Carmel and Fishers. There is a lot to do and areas of shopping here. Hamilton County is very family oriented and has great school systems. Good luck with your move!

  • We just moved here in April.  We live in Fishers and I absolutely love it.  The DH works downtown and the commute takes him between 35-40 minutes each way.  We only visited Indy twice before we placed an offer on our house so we we're super nervous about everything.  But, I couldn't be happier.  Our neighborhood is full of kids... and even though we don't have kids, I checked in about the schools and SE Hamilton county seems to have incredible schools. Good luck!

  • Stay away from the Pike Township area (northwest side). It has lots of tempting beautiful houses for great prices but it's not a very safe area. I wouldn't say its a good area to be raising a family.
  • We live near Broadripple.  I love it two minutes to target, grocery and Lowes. Parks all over for dogs and kids to play. Great walking paths.

Plainfield is close to downtown without all of the crime.  As a former teacher I can say with certainty that Plainfield schools are some of the top in the state.

    Good luck!
