I am planning an anniversary party for my parents along with my brother. We are planning on inviting family and a few of their friends...but the list has grown to about 50 people. We will probably have it at my brothers (very large) house. Does anyone have creative ideas for food/decorating/favors? We are going to try to do this as inexpensively as possible (I would love to have a big celebration at a banquet hall or something more formal, but money is tight right now).
If we have a buffet dinner do you think everyone needs a place to sit? That may be difficult if we have a large group come. I am wondering if we should just do heavy appetizers/drinks/desert instead. That way we can use a few small tables and people can just sit on the sofa and chat.
Thoughts??
Re: Ideas for 40th Anniversary Party
If you are planning to have any food you need to cut with a knife, then have seating for people. It's impossible to cut food standing up! And it could get messy. If you don't have room for people to sit, then I would probably suggest going with the appetizer and dessert idea.
For this type of party I think I would try to go with a buffet though. You could put up a large folding table with folding chairs just for dinner, and then have a few people help you take it down after dinner so there is more mingling room.
For my parents 30th anniversary, I got a picture of my mom's wedding bouquet and had a florist recreate the bouquet. Mom LOVED it. Just cried the moment she saw it.
For your decorations, you could use the colors of the wedding, if they had bridesmaid dresses or a cake or flowers in a certain color. If they had invitations or church programs for their wedding, you could get one blown up to a large size for decorations, or have them recreated as a party favor.

I think house parties = impossible to have a place for everyone to sit = serve food that doesn't require a place setting. It can still be dinnery, but not like steak, soup, or something messy where you would have to sit.
I threw my inlaws 40th wedding anniversary, in January, and went nuts at after Christmas deals buying ruby red decorations (it's the ruby anniversary). I scored a large glass red bowl, that I made my own red rose centerpiece in with flowers from a whole sale club. I also got a bunch of ruby red goblets, and mini trifle bowls with a red bottom, so I filled these with the hershey kiss cherry cordials, all of this was 75% off at Walmart, even the candy, but none of it screamed christmas. Then at each table, I did a few balloons and some confetti as well.
We had a video playing with pictures from their wedding and other special moments over the 40 years.
A nice cake, we wanted to replicate their wedding cake but someone offered to bring the cake and we didn't want to make this special request
Great ideas!! Thank you so much ladies
I think I am leaning towards the buffet with finger foods/things that are easy to eat...good thinking about the knife thing.
I LOVE the idea of getting discounted Christmas stuff in Ruby Red! I was already thinking I would go with a Ruby theme.
Oh, and I think I would cry too if someone re-created my wedding bouquet...and I just got married! lol Very creative!!
