making laundry detergent

I feel like we're going through tons of laundry detergent so I want to try making my own. I have a Whirpool Duet Sport front load washer. I don't think its HE, I can't find anything on the website about it and the apartment complex didn't leave the manual.

I'd rather make a liquid detergent than a dry one. I looked through the other posts but I didn't see an exact answer. What ingredients do I need for this, whats the ratio and can I find the ingredients at any store, like Walmart or something?

Thanks!

Re: making laundry detergent

  • You will need borax, washing soda, and a bar of soap.  I use Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap. You might be able to find it all at Wal-Mart...usually the washing soda is the hard part.  I looked and looked for it, and finally found it at a grocery store, but they stopped carrying it.  I'll have to order my next box from Amazon.

I've used a different recipe each of the three times I have made a batch, so here is one of them:

    http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2008/04/09/making-your-own-laundry-detergent-a-detailed-visual-guide/

I make a 1/3 batch every time, and then store it in an old laundry detergent dispenser (like this).

  • I haven't made the liquid version, but I use the powder version of this recipe from EF&F blog.  It works pretty well.  It also doesn't suds up a lot, so even if you are using an HE machine, it should be okay.

I don't use washing soda in mine, though, because it's difficult to find.  You can find it at Ace Hardware and on Ebay for fairly cheap if you want to go that route.

As for the Dr. B's - I always find mine at Target or Whole Foods.  If you try Target, they don't have it with the regular soaps.  They have it with their cosmetics - there's a small EF section there with Burt's Bees, etc.

  • We make our own and love it. It works well and smells good too. Not to mention, it saves us tons of $

I use: 1c borax, 1c baking soda, 1 grated bar of fels naptha soap. I just rinsed out an old laundry detergent container, give it a good shake before each use.
