Best places for lunch near Union Station?

My DH and I will be in town for a few hours on Saturday, between our flight coming into O'Hare and our train leaving from Union Station.  We need to get a bite to eat for lunch, and we have a few hours to kill.

We'll be dressed casually, so nothing too fancy.

We talked about going to The Gage, but do you have some other suggestions?

We'd also like to get something easy to take on the train for dinner - maybe a sandwich or something else easy.  Any suggestions on where to pick up something?

Re: Best places for lunch near Union Station?

  • The Berghoff is on Adams a few blocks east of Union Station and has good food if you like German food.  They also have a more casual place in the basement where you get the food yourself and take it to a table - they have a variety of sandwiches, salads and some entrees and are not all German.  I've never had a bad meal there.

Greektown is only a few blocks west of Union Station and there are a number of good restaurants.  Pegasus is one my favorites.

Venice Cafe is in the basement of the Sears Tower.  It is very casual, but has great Italian food, if you are looking for a quick lunch.

Depending on what kind of sandwich you are looking for, there is a Potbelly's on Adams across from Union Station.  There are also a number of restaurants in Union Station where you can grab a sandwich.

  • In Greektown I love The Greek Isles.

Boston Blackies is a popular burger place on Canal St. and Monroe (I don't remember the day of the week you'll be here, but be warned this is usually always busy noon-1pm)

I too nominate Potbellys.  I work a block from US and they are definitely my standby.

Elephant and Castle Pub is a few blocks east of US on Adams St and has great food.

There's also just Corner Bakery in Sears Tower that has sandwiches, salad, soup and is a quick eat.

  • I love love love Roti.  It's kind of like a Mediterranean Subway.  You can get a chicken, steak, or falafal (sp?) sandwich and then add whatever toppings (like feta or olives) you'd like.  Delicious.
