xp taking photos..

I want to take some photos at home of family and want to know what is the best option for lighting. I thought about setting up a basic studio (sheets, work lights) in the basement but there's no sunlight down there. Or I could take the photos in our loft with a couple windows to the left. What is the best place to take photos? I want a plain background but wasn't sure if its better to use lights that you can focus toward the subjects or use sunlight...
