Grandmothers

Ok, so I have four women in their 70s and 80s, and I have no idea what to get them.

It's difficult, because I don't want to flare up anyone's diabetes, or give them a book that is too blurry to read, etc.

What do you give ladies who are really old and have almost every imaginable clothing or houseware item?

Re: Grandmothers

  • Framed photos, coffee (DHs grandparents just got a Keurig so we filled a basket with assorted cups for them to try), warm blanket, restaurant gift card (if you know where they like), large print book/magazine, photo book, ornaments, hobby supplies.
  • I got my grandma (82 years old) a DVD of old movies from when she was young. One of those DVDs for 4 movies on it, Shirley Temple movies to be exact! :) GL!
  • Framed family photo's or photo album's. My grandmother (age 68) LOVES western's, so western's on dvd. She loves gift cards to department stores, so she can hit the end of season sales. Mani/pedi gift certificate to her nail salon. She loves pajama's.

Find out things that they like and go from there.

  • What is your budget?

I hate to ask this, but.... are they in assisted living?  If they are any bath and body lotion set would be good... they don't get things like that in nursing homes... like the ones from drug stores will be fine.... nothing too expensive.

Also... Christmas Floral arrangements are good... So they can throw them out at the end of the season.

You can put together a photo album of pictures of their family and friends.... like old pictures.... most older ladies like that :)

  • DH's parents are grandparent age.  I think his best friend said it best when she said that being with them is like hanging out with someone else's grandparents.  We get his mom jewelery or gardening stuff usually.  Pottery Barn has some great paperwhites in a pot this year.

  • The thing about my grandmother is that anything you give her, she is going to give away to someone else.  I dont know if anyone else has family members like that.  She just loves to give things to other people.  So I got her a magazine subscription.  This way, every month she can read the magazine then give it to one of her friends or something.
  • This year, I got DH's grandmother very fancy, pretty smelling pillar candles and a tray. DH's grandparents love to go to the movies, so some years we've gotten them a movie theatre gift card. This year, I got my grandmother her favorite perfume in a gift set with lotion, bath gel, and a makeup bag.  In the past, I've bought her picture frames and put special pictures in them (I once bought her a Chia pet . . . but that was a weird inside family joke - I don't recommend it.) Pajamas, a warm robe, or slippers would be a nice gift.

  • None of my sweet ladies are in assisted living, but I do like the idea of lotions and shower gels. They are consumable products that don't mess with dietary restrictions.

  • We send DH's grandma a gift certificate to a resaurant every year - she likes it and it makes going out more affordable.

For my grandparents: wine (from a local winery that I know they like), I will make fudge & candy for my grandpa (it makes him happy), and I will give my grandma bath stuff (as I doubt she will spend her own money on something frivolous).

  • People who have diabetes or other dietary restrictions are sometimes really super excited to receive homemade holiday treats that fit within their requirements. This diabetic-safe chocolate kahlua cake sounds crazygood. That site has a bunch of other holiday recipes as well.
