How much to pay for snow plowing?

Our next door neighbor plowed our driveway all last winter and has started doing it again this winter. We have asked him how much money he wants but he insists he doesn't want anything and just does it to keep busy. DH and I just don't feel right about not giving him anything. We really should have given him something last year and I feel bad that we neglected to do that. This year I want to make sure we give him something. I'm just not sure what a reasonable amount would be.

Our driveway is small and like I said he lives right next door so it's not like he's travelling far to our house. However, he also plows our dirt road that we live on with (not including the neighbor who plows) 3 other houses. I don't think the other houses pay him at all either, but not sure. The dirt road is about 1/8 of a mile. So I guess we would want to pay for our portion of the dirt road as well as our driveway.

We were thinking a $50 gas card. Would that be enough?

  • I think that because he has said not to pay him, anything you choose is icing on the cake and would be much appreciated.

  • I think that sounds like a nice idea.  I like the thought of giving something rather than straight cash, and that's a really useful something too that helps with what he's doing.

  • Agreed, perhaps throw in a baked good or something...
  • Think it's a great idea. Like Jess said, anything is extra if he said not too. FIL plows a lot of people and never asked for anything, but he usually will get a couple bottles of wine or maybe a gift card to the 99's or something. He thinks it's great, but at same time he just starts plowing and can't stop :)
  • Thanks ladies. I think we're going to go with a $50 card to the Irving Station, a baked good and a nice card. :)
