Overeating (Abe...not me)

I think Abe is an overeater. He will nurse and nurse (eating every 2 hours) and then will spit up over and over...and I mean a lot. And then he has a tummy ache. And if I take him off the boob before he is done (or thinks he is done) he will cry. I'm not sure what to do. I feel so bad when he has a belly ache. I think I am producing about 3-4oz during a feeding (going by what I pump).

Thoughts?

Re: Overeating (Abe...not me)

  • Oh. And I don't think it is GERD because he doesn't always spit up. I would say out of the 10-12 feedings a day he spits up half the time. And often he will be completely happy and then will spit up.
  • T was a huge spitter. Babies know when they are full and will stop when they are. So I would just let him eat and keep a rag handy! It's annoying but he will grow out of it, when he starts solids!

  • Marcus would have times when he was really little where he wanted to nurse for comfort or because he needed to suck, but then would get mad and spit out the milk.  Like "suck, suck, cry, spit" repeat.  That's when I intro'd the paci which helped tremendously.  I know you already use a paci with him, but maybe trying to get him off the boob and onto the paci when you feel like he's just comfort nursing?

  • Jake was a super duper spitter upper too, and I didn't think it was reflux either since he was happy as a clam doing it and it didn't seem to hurt.  Some babies just do that.  I think they get in the groove of nursing/drinking and just don't pay attention until their belly won't fit anymore.  I wouldn't worry about it unless he spit up the majority of each nursing session or had pain.  GL and have burp cloths everywhere around the house ready to go!
