I had my interview a week ago. I believe I was 3 out of 4 interviews, and VP said they were hoping to make a decision by Friday. 

It's now Tuesday, and I'm guessing a good number of the search committee is starting to take their holiday vacations.

I'm normally anti-follow up post-interview b/c I know it's pretty nagging, but in this case, do you think I could contact the VP for a status update?  I can't bear the thought of being kept in the dark until January.

I wouldn't want to wait until January either mamie! I'd call and maybe say something along the lines that you were following up to find out about the status of the position and were wondering if there were any other questions you could answer for them (to help them see you are the right fit for the job, like I know you are) : )

Good luck! I hope you hear something soon. Waiting is the worst.

I wouldn't be calling yet, but that's because in my industry, they may say a few days, but it's never less than a few weeks.  Could you call an HR person to see if a hiring decision has been made.

Otherwise, if you do call, I'd phrase it in a "just wanted to touch base and see if you had any further questions or concerns I could address for you" way.

Ditto mb on this one. I'd definitely call, and as pp said, make it more about answering additional questions/concerns but also ask about status. If they hadn't said they'd likely be making a decision by Friday, I would've said don't call.

I don't *think* the position is technically filled since it's still on the website, and I know they were in there removing/adding positions, but I hate not knowing what the status is. I feel like my entire life is in limbo. Every purchase I think "well, I *may* have a steady paycheck soon... but maybe not." 

The institution (and similar ones) have notorious long hire times, but I wish the VP had never thrown "hopefully by Friday" into the conversation. Also there seemed an urgency to fill the position 'yesterday', but I'm also working with a search committee, which can def. stall things out.

I emailed and he called back an hour later. I wasn't the top candidate. This blows. I really wanted this.

Oh yuck Mames, so sorry to hear that.  I hate the games they play....so crappy that they were just going to leave you hanging.  I guess it is a good thing that you asked though, this way you're not in limbo any more.  This must mean that there is something better out there.  Still .

Oh mames, I'm just seeing this. I'm sorry. Sending you lots of *perfect job* dust and hoping it comes along soon. Things always have a way of working out, even if it's not in the way you planned or hoped.
