Mirena questions

I have read some stuff about Mirena but I was wondering if anybody who actually has it could give me some info...I can't take regular birth control pills because of mirgraines so I take progestin only pills (which I hate) also, I haven't had a baby but we'd like to at some point...I am just curious overall what people think of it and if anybody is in a similair situation with the headaches and stuff...and if it is so painful having not had a baby?

I should also add, I haven't checked insurance coverage either and I know its pricey so I should factor in how long until we start trying for a baby but I just want some opinions...Thanks!!

Re: Mirena questions

  • Ask your doctor these questions.
  • Hi there.  I have had Mirena since May 2010.  I LOVE it.  I was on birth control pills for a while, and had suicidal thoughts, while always having really heavy and painful periods.  I had some strange thing where my period pretty much lasted for an entire year.  I got Mirena inserted, in May, and still bled until August.  I have not had more than a little light spotting since August.  I love that I don't have to take pills every day, and we can be as spontaneous as we want. two side effects I have noticed, I think it is causing me to gain weight...but that could just be me gaining weight, and also, I am noticing an increase in facial hair growth.  Other than that I don't feel any side effects.  It is a great solution for me and I love it!  I have not had kids, and was actually a virgin when it was inserted.  It did hurt, and I cramped for up to a month while exercising.

My insurance paid all but $35 of it, which you have to admit, is a good price for 5 years of birth control!  Good luck with your decision!

  • i have it, been about 2 years. it is great. i have 2 kids. the only not like side effect i did have was crazy bleeding/spotting for the first few months. there was no pattern just whenever was very annoying but after a few months it all stopped.

the other complaint i got was from husband, it poked him which hurt but there again after a few months strigs got softer and i had doc trim them.

overall its been a great descion. i also had bad problem with pills. shortness of breath, chest pains.also did the shot for awhile and gained crazy weight plus migranies.

i will def have another put in at the end of my 5 years
