I got it at Hallmark....Chris told me about it and I had to have one too. Basically, it symbolizes good luck. You put it on your tree, and whoever finds it gets the surprise gift.
We plan on doing this in a few years with Taylor and when she has a sibling and they are older, whoever finds it has to buy the gift for the following year.
Such a cool tradition and one we never did as a kid. I'm glad you liked it Liza! (and the puppy just jumped out at me, talked me, and screamed your name! hahaha)
Re: The pickle ornament
Oh my, my father started the pickle ornament tradition a few years ago. However, it has since developed into him using a real pickle, (one of those teeny tiny ones for snacking) and hiding it so we can't find it. Last year there were about 8 adults searching the tree, and it took us about an 1.5 hours to find it. We even resorted to sniffing out the darn thing...It was inside a bell ornament tucked into the branches. This year in my condition my mom told my dad to move the tree out from the wall so I could fit behind it and not knock it over. I was also told under no circumstances am I allowed to stand on the side table like I did last year.
DH and I have a theory that this year it is actually hidden in a pre-drilled hole...we actually spent a good 10 minutes contemplating our search strategy for this year. Dad keeps saying no one will find it.
It really is a fun tradition, especially for my father who delights in watching all of his grown children search the tree! I should mention the secret gift idea...
The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware; joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware. -Henry Miller
