POLL: Photo cards

POLL: Do you like photo cards?

Nowadays I receive several of those holiday photo cards from people showing their family and pets.

It's nice to see the families change from year to year, but my main complaint is the cards don't stand up and there's really not much personalization put into them as they are pre-printed and they don't even have to sign their names. There's also that element of 'brag fest' about them.

I realize they are great for buy moms. I personally like to take the time to individually write each card and enclose a newsletter.

What are your thoughts on photo cards?

Re: POLL: Photo cards

  • I enjoy receiving photo cards. After Christmas I cut out the photos and hang them on the side of my fridge. They stay there until the next Christmas when I get new ones.

  • I put them in a photo album. It is nice to look back at them over the last several years.
  • I like them, but the ones I've received were always like normal greeting cards, so they do stand up and are signed inside, usually with a short handwritten note (in addition to a pre-printed message).  Like PP, after displaying them for the holidays, I keep them on my fridge.

  • They are okay....but only if you have children.  To me it seems a bit narcassitic for a couple without children to send out cards with multiple pictures of themselves.

  • Those are actually my favorite cards to get!
  • I like them and don't get the "brag fest" feel from the ones I get. Maybe I'm just happy they remember me and DH?

We're definitely doing them for next year with our little one!

  • After being single for 35 years I am so ecstatic to do photo cards with a picture of me, H and SD. Plus we both have a zillion relatives so it's nice to not have to sign and write out every one of them. =)

  • I like them!  They are so much more personal.

There are wire photo holders that hold photo cards.  I see a LOT of holiday ones at Christmas (star, tree, etc.).  There is one at Pier1 that is just a long "tree" (just a long pole with places for the photos).

Also, Pottery Barn Teens has photo holders in the shape of an initial (like a J if your last name is Jones).

Or you can just put them in a basket.

This is one example - - but they have other choices at Pier1 too!   Including a Santa.

  • I like getting them its always nice to see photos of people you do not see often but I always find it difficult on what to do with them after Christmas? And yes they are highly impersonal.

  • I actually make my own photocards. This year, I had 2 wedding pictures (our first kiss and cutting the cake) and it said "Thanks Santa, but I already got everything I wanted! Love, J and J"

I also hand made every single envelope. So, maybe more work goes into to them than you think.

  • I don't mind them, but I agree most are impersonal.  They're like a mass mailing to me, all pre-printed, all the same, just go to different households.  So if the person takes the time to write something on it, that goes a long way with me.

I personally stick to the normal card giving and always write a little note inside, people seem to really appreciate that.  Sometimes I include a photo or two inside as well for people who I know would like to receive them.

  • I did photo cards for the first time this year. Normally  I do a regular card and include a 4*6 photo. This year since we got married and wanted to share more photos we did a photo card. I had love, the Drew Family printed on the card but signed our names on the back of each one. I also wrote out a newsletter to include with each one.

  • I like them too. It's nice to see friends/family that we don't get to visit with very often...

I appreciate the effort of signing a card but I think the picture cards are more interesting to get..but to each his own!

  • I personally love photo cards! I love seeing how the families change and what they have been up to during the year. I know DH & I do photo cards and use either different photos or just one certain occasion. This year we just picked photos from our Honeymoon and sent those out!

  • I don't mind photo cards, but I really like photos in general, to see how people have changed. I send out regular cards, but include a photo that I have put the text 'Merry Christmas 20-- C&C' we have taken a photo with our dogs in the past, but this year it happened to be a wedding photo. We don't have kids yet, but many of our relatives put the picture we send on the fridge or ina frame all year long. I do sign all the regular cards though too.

  • I prefer photo cards over the other options.  I'd rather "see" family or friends as opposed to an ugly card with a picture of a Christmas tree or the star of Bethlehem (sp?)

I started sending out photo cards last year and will repeat yearly.

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

I like photo cards, but I have to say that I think sending out pictures of your kids is just as braggy as sending out pictures of yourself.

  • Photo cards are cute. I like them.

Most people don't write much in their cards anyway.

I am happy to get any kind of card at all.

  • I think what you might consider is the time, and expense of actually sending a personalized photo card.  Maybe you would appreciate them a little more than you apparently do.

I think they are a nice way of sending a holiday greeting.  There are photo cards that are standable.  The cost is considerably more, and most of the messages have to be created by the sender.  They can also be created for a personalized signature or a pre-printed signature.

  • I love photo cards! I love seeing how my cousins and family change each year! Esp. since my family lives all over and I am lucky if I see them once a year (usually not that much).  This year I did my first photo card and I used our family picture from DH and I's wedding.  It has us and my two-step kids!  It turned out great and everyone loved it!  I plan on doing them each year.  Usually when people send me regular Christmas cards, all they do is sign their names anyway,

some people can't have kids.  should we also not be allowed to have photo christmas cards?

  • I get quite a few but don't care for them, but better than nothing I suppose.  I just assume it was the last resort for a sender who would not have otherwise gotten cards out.
    nothing
  • I love photo cards.  I like seeing everyone's faces and it doesn't matter to me if it is children or adults or pets.  I will say that now that facebook is so common, I see everyone's pictures much more often and the photo cards are less exciting/surprising.  It used to be that the only picture I would see of old friends and their children were the photo cards and now I can see them quite regularly on their facebook pages.
  • I like photo cards.  Sometimes, it's the only time we get photos of some people and their growing families, despite asking throughout the year.  I love photos in general.

My family and I were talking about it last week and we actually find newsletters to be more of a "brag-fest".  Those who send them (that we know personally) are always appearance driven over-achievers who appear to merely want credit for their accomplishments throughout the year.  A greeting card should be a sentiment of thoughtfulness and affection for the recipient, not a play-by-play of the sender's own life.  That's my personal feeling on the matter.
