#1 - I got one of those glass straws that you talked about on your blog,  for Christmas!

#2 - I'm becoming addicted to canning. We got a canning kit a couple months ago when H wanted to can home made jalapeno relish. I put 3 different canning books on my Amazon wish list & actually got 1 of them for Christmas! I'm so excited to can something. I never thought I would ever say that.

Re: ::Jaye::

  • I love glass straws!  It's my newest weird obsession.  I even carry them around in my purse and use them when we go out to eat.  Cody thinks I'm crazy but I don't care.

    Canning is SO addicting, I love it!  I got a pressure cooker for Christmas so I can make meat stuff now and I am so excited for it!  My Dad actually got me this DVD set about how canning and food preservation is going to save the world.  I haven't watched it yet but it seems really interesting.   At the very least, your family and friends will love your new hobby when they get fresh jams from you.  And tell them giving you the jars back means they want more- that way you don't have to keep buying them.  :)

  • I know people have been doing it forever, but I'm scared of canning meats Embarrassed It just seems like if you don't get that right, it can go terribly, terribly wrong. Like kill you wrong. But I would love to try it! Plus Ted & I are those weird people with survival strategies if a catastrophe ever happens and I've thought about how important it will be to have canned proteins along with our canned vegetables & fruits.

    eta: I love using straws for drinking, but I hate buying things for the house that I will continually want/need but throw away just as often, which is why I never have straws at home. My glass straw remedies that :)

  • My Glass Straw obsession is kind of sick.  I have straws designated for everything!  I have my main straw that stays at home and I use it all the time.  I have my travel straw that lives in my purse and I use when I eat out.  Then I have a straw for Cody, a straw for a guest, and a straw specifically for malts and shakes.  Yes.  I'm ill.  I need help.

    But instead of getting it, I'm waiting about a month and then I'm contacting another straw company and I'm hoping to get even more.  Yup.  Let the obsession continue...  Geeked  And I will be sure to give you a heads up if I get to do a giveaway.  :)

    Right now my master plan with meats is to make just a little bit and eat it right away (less than a month anyway).  If I ever get more confident with it I'll make it to store it but that probably won't be for a while.  I'm hoping my preserving book will help make me more confident.  I got the Ball book, which did you get???

  • I got this one. I haven't made anything from it yet, but I did look through all the recipes on Sunday. I'm pretty stoked.

    I want to get this one & this one still. I know the Ball one covers jams & pickling, but I want canning books that are ALL about those two things. I recently discovered I love pickled jalapenos and I want to try pickling my own. Ted & I made jalapeno relish, but it's a sweet relish and I don't really care for sweet relishes. I want something salty & tangy like pickles, but with jalapenos. Plus I have an uncle that makes to-die-for pickles but he won't share his recipe (yet Wink) I think if I make some kick-arse pickles of my own he'll be forced to share his recipe. lol.

  • That's the book I got!  I haven't been able to read it yet since all of my gifts were shipped ahead of me but I can't wait!

    And... yummy!  I'm drooling.  We'll have to share recipes sometime.  I haven't tried pickling yet but that's my next mission.  It's so amazing the possibilities that are there when you really get into (and good at) canning.  Ah, the foods we will eat...
