Re: New Years traditions

  • For the past 10 years or so my mom and my aunt have taken turns hosting NYE. We get a bunch of seafood and make lots of different dishes. We also have steak and chicken for those who don't like the seafood, so it's kind of a surf and turf feast. Then we play board games and/or video games and wait for the ball to drop.

    1. Breathe.  you can do this.
    2. What is your target audience?  Multiple generations, Families with Small Children,  Grown ups (ahem) with Foodie Aspirations?
    3. What meal are you doing?  Just nibbles (appys and desserts) or a full square meal?

Easy Nibbles ideas:  Goat Cheese empanadas, use refrigerated pie dough, roll out dough and cut out sixteen to twenty 2 1/2 " circles with a mug. Place a small teaspoon of goat cheese in the center of each circle (about four oz total), add a scant teaspoon of salsa.  Brush edge of dough with water.  Fold in half and pinch  closed.  place on cookie sheet.   Bake in a 400 degree preheated oven for 8-12 minutes.   Serve hot. .

Pick up fresh melon two days before.  Let sit on counter to ripen.  Cut melon into wedges.  Wrap a thin slice of prosciutto around half the wedges. Secure with a toothpick. (About 1 lb slice very thin should work).   Cantalope and Honeydew both work well.

Two days in advance, place a 1/4 cup of fresh herbs chopped fine in a small jar.  My favorite is rosemary and basil.   Cover with 1 cup olive oil.  The day of the party  Brush the infused oil on eight pita breads.  Cut bread into four wedges.  Cook in 400 degree preheated oven for 10-15 minutes. Serve with sliced cucumbers, carrot sticks and hummus.

Pick up some whole grained mustard.  Mix 1/2 cup mustard with two tbsp of honey.  Serve honey mustard with thick pretzel sticks and apple slices.

  • Thank you for replying!!

I think I will deff try to make it a surf and turf night. We have done pork roast for so long it just makes me sick now. thanks again!

  • goodness! you must be a pro at this stuff. thank you so much for the ideas!

  • Our menu tonight is meatballs, cheese balls and crackers (balls are fun since the drop.... lol). We are also having apple cobbler due to popular request. I don't think apple cobbler has anything to do with NYE, but everyone loves the way I make it.
