Question for the moms re:diapers

I am hosting a baby shower for a couple that is due in February and they requested a diaper shower.  On the invites, I alternated size suggestions so there are 2 couples per size (1-5).  I?m trying to figure out what I should give them.  I have no clue how fast baby?s grow.  Are they going to need a lot of one size in particular?  She has gained about 20-25 pounds so far so I?m thinking the baby (girl) will be smaller??  I don?t want to make them store them for a long time but I wasn?t sure how fast the baby would go through the sizes.  Also, instead of diapers should I get them complimentary items (wipes, diaper geni, etc).  If so, what?

I?m so clueless so any help is appreciated!

Re: Question for the moms re:diapers

  • We did a diaper/wipes raffle at my shower and I loved it :) We requested size 1-2-3 only and I wished I would've requested NB, too! So far, I've only had to purchase NB diapers, Evan was in them for about the first whole month. It really depends on the size of the baby (he was 8.5 lbs at birth). Sz 1 states that they fit up to 16 lbs, but my skinny little guy weighs more than that and he still wears sz 1 because he's got a tiny hiney. I also got a ton of wipes and haven't had to buy any yet and Evan is 6 mos old! I would say buy them a jumbo size box of wipes, you can get them at Sam's or Costco and a package of NB diapers. Then if you feel the need, a GC for walmart or Target so they can buy more diapers, etc. And I also love my diaper genie II - no stinky nursery for us. Lol.

Another idea is try to gather up some baby item coupons for them. They are always helpful.

Hope my rambling helps a little :)

  • We were out of newborn and size 1's by the time K was a month and a half.  We have been in size 2's since 1.5 months until now (5 months) and will just be going into 3's on our next box (probably 5.5 months).  Every baby is different but I was always err on the bigger side, since the baby will always grow into them.  We have a lot of size 1's we never got to use and gave away.  I love having some of the bigger size diapers on hand.

  • I loved getting diapers at my showers.  It totally depends on the baby.  I had no newborn diapers when Ella  was born and she was in them for about a month.  She was in size 1 for probably 2 months or so, size 2 for 3-4 months and she's still in size 3.  Ella has bigger thighs so she outgrows diapers in the legs before she does in the waist.  I would suggest not stocking up on smaller diapers in case their baby is bigger, but do still get them some.

Wipes are also great.  Shampoo, Soap, Lotion, Diaper rash cream -- all that they will use and it was great for us already having them handy in the cupboard.

    Hopefully that helps.

  • I can't remember about the diaper sizes and such - it's been too long!

But - I do know that you can never have too many wipes.. I still buy wipes to keep in the car for other stuff too - they come in handy for stuff besides diaper changes, so I'd get them some packages of those as well.

I remember from my shower with Aidan I got SO much lotion, shampoo and baby wash, that I just last year used the last bottle of the shampoo -- that's 4 years worth of the stuff! It was nuts how much of that stuff I got.

  • Just a thought on the lotions and stuff... my daughter has sensitive skin and we haven't been able to use any of the stuff we were given at my shower and I feel bad people bought us so much that is going unused.

Also I love my diaper genie but I know a lot of people don't use/like them so I would only get it if the parents-to-be requested one.

  • Thanks Moms!  This helps a ton!  A friend who can't make it gave me money for a present so I think I'll get newborn diapers with his money.  They did register for a diaper genie so I'll make sure they still want/need it and I think I'll get that and a big thing of wipes.

  • I gained 25 lbs and my baby was 7 lbs 3 oz. We are using lots of newborn diapers. I would think that if everyone else is getting diapers, it would be nice for you to get the wipes, diaper rash creams, diaper genie, etc. For Christmas my sister got us a large case of wipes refills from Sam's (I think it has about 500 wipes) and a large case of size 1 diapers.
