So it looks as if my point and shoot has decided to not want to work anymore. I was thinking of upgrading to a fancier camera (SLR) but am overwhelmed by the choices. I know this has been discussed numerous time; I just never paid attention.
Re: Rec your camera
I recommend reading this blog post... I literally just discovered it yesterday and I think it's the perfect bit on how to choose what's right for you.
I have the Canon Rebel XS and I absolutely love it. it's really easy to use and learn. the reason I chose Canon over Nikon is because I had a Canon P&S and therefore I knew some of the functions on the dSLR.

yes, absolutely! it's listed as one of the best beginner cameras out there. I found it really fun to use when I first got it, and the automatic settings are super easy to figure out... they pretty much do all the work for you! once you shoot in manual though, you'll never go back to auto... just a warning.
that lens is also really helpful when it comes to having the right lenses for what you want to photograph. I recommend having a standard 18-55mm to start out with.

Ditto Mandee on AFWells' blog, that post is very helpful and her entire blog has some great posts and tutorials. I definitely recommend going to a camera store and actually playing around with them so you can get a feel for what you like. I have a Nikon, it's not an entry level camera, but the buttons and menus just felt more intuitive for me than the Canon. You cannot go wrong with either brand, they have some differences, but both have great cameras and lenses in their line up.
The Bump has a photography board that also has some good recommendations. Good luck!
I agree with pp.
I was using a Canon Rebel XSi. Now I have a Nikon 3100. They are very similar. The only reason I went with Nikon is because I wanted the video feature. It seemed like I had to spend a bit more on a Canon to get that.
I agree with going into a store and checking them out.
And love AFWells' blog.
