Re: Pack for me? Please?

  • If I pack for you, I'm going to pack myself right into your suitcase. Is that okay?

  • Moo, you are welcome to since I have no idea what to bring. I assume I'll bring several pairs of shorts and t-shirts. A couple swimsuits and coverups, my hiking sandals, and one dress. But then I wonder, is everything freakishly air conditioned?

  • Depending on breezes and air temps, I would definitely pack a few light jackets/cardigans and maybe a pair or two of pants. I've never been on a cruise, but we go boating a lot and it can get colder at night, especially on the water.
  • How about things to wear to dinner?  It's been a while since I've been on a cruise, but we dressed up every night.
  • Hrm, I have been on exactly one cruise when I was 8 or so, but I'm wearing little cardigans in many of the pictures, so I'd say yes. Bring a light jacket/sweater, especially if you'll be out on the deck at night. Sea breeze and all.

Plan to dress up one night for dinner.

  • Didn't you just get back and it's already time to pack again?

I have been on one super cheap cruise years ago.  All I remember was being annoyed that you had to dress up for dinner every night.  So you may need more than one dress.
You're going to need socks and sandals and a fanny pack.

Comfy shoes.  I don't know the weather at all, but a light hoodie or something for going up on the deck at night when it's windy might be nice.

Are you doing any activities?  Or will all of your activities be of the lounging, sunning, and drinking variety?

  • I could lend you Evie. She's compact and can help keep you up all night so you don't miss anything.

  • I was assuming Mod's usual fashion sense would be okay for most dinners, and then dressy dress up one night. Do they still do the whole captain's night thing?

  • Thanks all. I will pack a few dressier items than I had been planning on.

I think I will pack like I am going camping but out for two nice dinners as well.

I am hoping for mainly drinking and sunning but who knows.

And yes I just got back and need to pack again.

  • I will pack for you if you come and take down all of my Christmas decorations for me! Deal?

I have no additional advice but I agree with the others. Dressier items for dinners and some heavier tops for windy weather.

  • The beauty of cruises is they can be whatever you want. Many people dress for dinner every night but you will see just as many in dressy casual, ie. dress and sandals for women, khakis and polo for men. There typically will be one dressy night asking for formal wear but its not required.

H and I like to bring cards with us. We find a nice table along the promenade, play cards and people watch. We find this a great way to pass away the afternoon during those "fun days at sea."

I've been to two of those ports; Nassau and St Thomas. We're not big joiners so we like to set out on our own. We explored Nassau, staying somewhat near the port. We were able to get around fairly easy and enjoyed being on our own. St. Thomas has a great shopping district. I highly recommend a little restaurant called Gladys' for good local food and drinks. It's been a couple of years since we were there but I think it was a landmark of some sort so should still be there.

     Have fun!

  • Mod, I'll meet you for a mocktail in Miami and also jump in your suitcase. It's been really cold here lately (I'm about 45 minutes North of Miami) so I would being a sweater or two, especially something that could go over your dinner outfit in case it's chilly in the dinning rooms. I'm not sure what the weather will be like on the islands but you should be fine with shorts/capris and tanks or t's during the day.

  • I consulted two cruise enthusiasts for you.  You're welcome.

They both said you'll be mostly fine with shorts and short sleeves, but to bring a sweater or light jacket just in case.  A lot of people apparently just wear their bathing suits all day.  Hmm  I think our freakish cold snap is supposed to lift today or tomorrow so Miami will probably not be too bad.

They both said that depending on the cruise line, the dressing up at night is not that dressy.  There will be everything from jeans and nice tops to sundresses to nice dresses.  If there's a formal night, people will dress up a little more, but you don't have to bring a ballgown (good to know, right?).

  • For a 7 night cruise there are usually two formal nights.  Whether you choose to participate is entirely up to you but usually you want to wear something somewhat dressy on those nights if you're going to dinner in the dining rooms.  And the dining rooms are usually freezing so I always recommend a nice cardigan that you could wear over your "dinner clothes".
