**maeghan21 or anyone else who fosters dogs**
I know you've mentioned fostering before, but the post below made me remember. Do you mind if I ask which organization you foster through? DH and I are thinking of fostering in the next few months. I was looking at Lucky Pup Rescue.
Re: **maeghan21 or anyone else who fosters dogs**
The one dog I fostered was through Lucky Pup (because that is who we adopted Buddy from...and THAT is Maeghan's fault!! lol)
Janet is really great. She just wants to do what's best for the dog(s). She always open to suggestions and is great about making sure the dog is taken care of.
I haven't been able to do much since Taylor was born. mostly because when I can do something, I have Taylor with me, which can hinder some of what I can do. hmm, did that make sense?? lol
I have done a ton of home visits for them and one really long transport. I've done phone calls (which isn't my favorite, mostly because I work in a call center) too. Any little thing you can do to help is appreciated....really, not just saying that
They seem like a really great organization (from what I have gathered from the website and FB page). Glad to hear you had a good experience with them.
One of the reasons we want to foster now, is because if I get preggo in the next year, we either want a dog that we're already comfortable with or we don't want one at all. So we figure fostering will be a good "trial run" for our new dog. When we adopted Hudson from a rescue, he came with so many issues that we're still dealing with, so we are trying to be cautious about our next dog. Not that we regret adopting him, just that he's a lot of work and not sure I could deal with two dogs with major issues while also dealing with a baby.
I've fostered and worked with Janet before and she is great, she lives down the road from me. I also work with Almost Home Rescue. I haven't fostered since Caroline's been born since we were moving etc. In the spring we'll start back at it. For now, I'm doing admin work and home visits etc. also.I've also helped a few girls, and their families, adopt dogs here
The thing with fostering is, if you really like the dog, you'll need to decide ASAP. Lots of people have fallen in love with a dog, and although you have first dibs, if you haven't made up your mind and an application comes through then you'll "lose" the dog. It is nice to "test" a dog though, and you're helping them out. AHR has a lot more resources then Janet, and I mention this, b/c if your dog has had issues in the past it may be best to really make sure you get a foster that best matches your dog so that even if you don't keep the foster, your dog doesn't regress.
Good point about my dog regressing. I hadn't thought of that. Most of his issues are just general anxiety and a fear of strangers. I would think he'll be OK because he plays with dogs at daycare and at friends' houses and he is fine. However,t he hasn't really bonded with those dogs like he would if another dog lived with us. Hmm. Something to think about.
Hope you don't mind me poking in!
We fostered for a year up until October of this year. Our dog loves other dogs and goes to daycare two days a week-he wasn't a fan of them in "his" house. But he was never mean, just annoyed(especially when we fostered two eight week old puppies!) But he never got upset when they left-I think he was happy haha The only reason we stopped though was because my DH was getting too stressed about it, I actually REALLY miss it.
And if you are looking for a smaller organization, the rescue I fostered for was Star Bright Animal Rescue...they are wonderful people and are in desperate need of fosters...they will work with you to pick the dog you think is best to foster(small vs large, male vs female etc) And they also give you a say in who adopts them-which made me feel really good. You can find them on Petfinder.(It says they are based out of Glenburn, ME but aren't-that is just where one of our coordinators live. )They are actually based out of GA and the dogs get transported up every two weeks to the Scarborough Walmart parking lot.
I wanted all seven of the dogs we fostered and cried every time they left, but knew by adopting them out I was able to save another one!!
Whew sorry that was so lengthy! Any chance I get to talk about dogs I go a little nuts!
I am hoping to get pregnant within the next year too! And I tried to convince my husband to keep fostering until then and potentially adopt, but it's not working. Haha
Awesome. Thanks for the info. I will have to check out that other rescue as well!
BTW your avatar says you are in Belgrade and you mentioned your dog goes to daycare. You don't by any chance use Willow Run do you? Just curious, as I know they are right on the Belgrade/Augusta line. That's where we take Hudson.
NO WAY! YES that is where we take Copper!!
He goes tues/thursdays! (We actually live in Rome, but it's on the Belgrade/Rome line and Rome sounds a lot farther away haha) I love them there! What kind of dog do you have again?
haha Small world. I love Willow Run. The people there are so awesome. The trainer we took obedience with at Pet Co (think that's what it's called...the one by Sears) works there on the weekends. That's how we found out about it.
We take Hudson periodically. Usually my dh comes home at lunch time to let him out. However if dh is travelling for work or not able to get home, we take Hudson to daycare. Our vet thinks he's a Black Lab/Greyhound mix. I think he looks more like a Black Lab/Weimaraner. So basically we don't know what the heck he is. LOL. He's medium sized and black and very thin and short.
I will have to keep an eye out for Copper next time we go!
He is the craziest yellow lab there! Yes, I love them at WR...they remind me of kindergarten teachers when they interact with the dogs.:) We brought all our fosters there too and they were so good with them, especially the ones that had some "issues".
Hudson sounds like a very cool mix!
