**MACB** and other BG users

I'm failing at using the bumgenius which I'm pretty sure is nearly impossible. They are leaking about 75% of the time. Last night I had him in one with the big insert and he slept for 4 hours and woke up soaking wet. During the day I have had him in the newborn insert and they leak. I'm going to start stuffing all the dipes with the big insert starting today. I think he is about 14ish pounds now so he is ready.

They are leaking, fairly consistently, on his left back side. I feel like I might be stuffing them incorrectly, maybe putting them on wrong?

I've, as you know, put so much money into them that they HAVE to work.

What do you think?

Re: **MACB** and other BG users

  • I don't wonder if he's just still too small.  It isn't just weight that determines when they are ready for the one size dipes- it can also be shape.  I can't remember when I moved to the regular inserts, but I can't imagine it was when he was as little as Abe.  (But then again, we don't need to use double inserts for him during the day.)

Here's a silly question... you do have them all snapped down to the smallest size, right?

He might be prone to sleeping/ sitting in a way that makes the pee run to the back left corner, so maybe you need to be sure the insert is good and tucked in that corner?

    Hm, I don't think I'm that much help. :-)

  • I never found that just the newborn insert was enough for day or night, so I'd definitely do the big insert during the day.  Do you have them snapped on the smallest setting with the size of the insert snapped to match?  I always would stuff them so that the folded over part of the insert is in the front  by his penis.  Make sure the back isn't rolled out so that the microsuede is exposed - Chris used to do this sometimes somehow, so that his clothes would wick moisture from the exposed fleece.  Do you have snap or velcro BG? Make sure they're on nice and snug.  Is the insert soaked with pee or is it possible that they are repelling?  You could test that by hitting them with a little stream of water from the sink - if it beads up and sits on the microsuede layer instead of going through the insert, you may have a repelling issue; although I doubt that would be the case this early on in use.  I'm guessing it's just some kind of user-error, because despite all the problems we've had, I've never had them leak.

  • I agree with Erika, whenever Caroline's leaked it was because I actually moved her up to the next size too soon. Also, you may just have a build up issue? We were still using newborn inserts at his age and even now that we're up to the big ones we don't have leaks except the occasional 12 hr sleep after a 9oz bottle incidents. I don't think there is a "right" way to stuff them. With the larger inserts we still have them snapped and I put that extra bulge part in the back so it doesn't smoosh her privates. Other than that, I just make sure it's a snug fit and we're good to go. Hope you can remedy it soon, leaky diapers and wet clothes are not fun!
  • I would agree with the girls that maybe its too big. We didn't switch over to the one sizers  for a while. Also, like Meg said, make sure the folded end is by the penis. Also, make sure they have been washed a lot. When I had leak issues it was because I hadn't built up their absorbancy enough.

Lastly, just make sure there is no microfiber showing. Every once in a while when Luke would leak I'd realize just a little piece of the inside was out, so when it absorbed it soaked his clothes.

Keep trying. I've found the BG to be amazing! But, I do remember having leak frustrations early on. When I finally got it, I realized why everyone loved them so much :) GL!

  • I do have them snapped to the smallest size. I have both snaps and hook and loops. Both appear to leak but i will try to pay attention to see if one leaks more than the other. I am tucking the insert under the little tab in the back and then putting the microfiber over that. I feel like he is pretty big but maybe the dipes are too big for him? **sigh** I will keep trying!!

    Thanks Chickies.

  • Is there gapping around the leg or any material sticking out there?  I used the organic one size and had more leaks be because the design made it easier for material to stick out unless you paid more attention and tucked everything in.  Are they tight enough around the waist?  I remember tugging to make sure they were snug enough.  Maybe try stuffing with a tri-fold cloth diaper and see if maybe it's the microfiber is resistant to absorbing?
  • We didn't start CDing until A was 2 months...and he's 3 1/2 months old now.  I *just* have been able to not have it snapped at the absolute most smallest size at night when we use the thicker inserts.  So maybe it is too big?  If so, maybe extra stuffing it would work because it would add extra bulk and make it fit better?  The good thing about BG is that they adjust....so they'll eventually work.  That's annoying to be changing complete outfits all the time though.  Although sometimes I'm secretly happy to have an excuse to dress him up in another cute little outfit.

  • It sounds like the gals have added everything I would.  Your diapers are new, right?  I wouldn't suspect build up at this point, but to check for absorbency take a cup of water and dribble it on to your inserts.  If it aborbs, you're good. It not, you may need to wash in hot a few more times. GL!  Leaking, sizing, and diaper rashes are all PITA!
