Hello, I am very interested in what you have to say about Avondale. we are planning on moving to the Phoenix area in the next year or so and I am really interested in the Avondale area. A very good friend of mine is moving there in a few weeks to go to UTI and he says he loves it there. He said it is really clean and a nice area.
We would be buying a house and looking for jobs in the customerservice industry. I am also wondering if a commute to Scottsdale is going to kill me?? I am hoping to go to school at SCI for 1 year. That would be the commute, just a year.
We have a 4 year old and a newborn so we are interested in schools too. thanks for any information.
Re: those of you in Avondale????
My husband works for UTI (at their corporate office in North Phoenix)
Anyway, I live in Laveen, just east of Avondale. I don't know anything about the schools honestly, I had a few friends that went to a HS in Avondale, and it was a good school. Truthfully schools in AZ (public) are horrible, DH and I have only looked into private schools for our "hopefully" children.
I do LOVE the area. I love the mountain views, and that there's just so much around and to do. I also love how family oriented the neighborhoods are.
With the commute- this is the junky part. However, I will say, time of commute makes a HUGE deal. I used to commute to downtown Scottsdale (actually only 1/2 mile south of SCI). If you're commuting before 7am or after 9am, it's really not bad. Same if you're commuting before 4pm or after 7pm again, it's not bad.
In it's worst does it stink-yes, but honestly going from SCI ANYWHERE between 4pm-7pm will suck. It's just a congested part of town. However only doing it for 1 year, makes it not so bad and for sure tollerable.
To be fair, there are some really great public schools in Arizona. The educational system as a whole in this state is terrible. Funding is awful (and uneven).
And there are some REALLY bad schools here.
Buuuuut... I teach (well, taught - since I'm a SAHM now) at one top 100 high schools in the nation (I live in Tucson). There are some truly great schools here with some amazing teachers who get incredibly creative with the lack of funding and still are able to provide a stellar education to students here.
So, definitely do some research if schools are important to you. Because there are some really bad ones. I am not personally familiar with Avondale schools, but I seem to have heard some bad things about them from some friends of mine. I could be wrong though (seriously - I'm not 100% sure if that is the area they lived in - I know it was near there though). There is a website that rates schools in Arizona. It's a good place to start. It's not a perfect review system, but it gives you an idea.

Hi! I live in Litchfield Park and work in the Avondale Elementary School District. Interestingly enough, Avondale Elementary School District mostly covers the Goodyear areas, not Avondale. For example, Heather (sweetie6609) lives in a really nice part of Avondale, but I *think* their school district is Littleton (I don't really know much about this district). Our district is comprised of several Title 1 schools (I work at one) and several affluent schools farther west. Even within a district, that is a lot of differences between schools.
Looking online at specific school's ratings and reviews from parents will probably give you a good idea of what to expect.
If it helps at all, my DH and I will be looking in the Litchfield Park/far west Goodyear areas when we are ready to buy a house (a big factor for us is education).
I live in the heart of Litchfield Park (what we call the 4 corners) same as *sandipluschris* and its beautiful!! There are a lot of really nice older houses in this area and they are going for great prices right now too. Litchfield Park Elementary School is one of the top rated schools out here. Plus they have an activity center for kids. Its a fantastic neighborhood to raise a family in. Its also just north of Avondale.
As far as Avondale and Goodyear go I have lived in Goodyear before and really close to Avondale and its the same as any neighborhood, you'll have good areas and bad areas.
As far as the commute to Scottsdale you're gonna hate it, but if its for just a year you will be able to make it. Most of Arizona is set up like a grid. You can do mostly freeways for the bulk of the driving
