French Bulldog- visible 3rd eyelid

Hello,

My 1 1/2 year old French Bulldog's 3rd eyelids have always been somewhat visible in the corner of his eyes, but I feel like they have been even more visible in the last couple of days.  The one on the left side seems to be covering the eye a little more than usual and appears to be somewhat red.  It's not bubbling out or anything, and doesn't look like the pictures of cherry eye that I've seen online (I know that's not the greatest resource sometimes, but I'm trying to provide as much info as possible).

His eyes do get red sometimes, especially when he's tired, but I'm a little bit concerned.  Have any of you had this issue with your dog?  I know Frenchies are more susceptible to having these types of problems, but wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue before, and if so, what you did about it.

 Thank you!

  • I've seen Cherry Eye, but nothing like what you're talking about. Can you get into the vet to get it checked out?
  • Sounds like it could be infected to me. I'd get it checked out by a vet.

  • I've been looking at his eyes all day, and it looks like the other one is red too, just not as much as the left eye.  He also seems to have a lot of "eye boogers", for lack of a better term.  I'm wondering if they may just be really dry or something, but either way he's going to see the vet tomorrow morning!  Thanks for the suggestions!
  • With eye gunk it definitely sounds infected. I'd take him in for sure. My cat gets eye infections pretty frequently. I like the ointment over the drops, but my mom prefers the drops. If it is infected ask the vet to show you how to put them in. Keep in mind it will be harder for you than for the vet (in my experience anyway) but you'll get the hang of it eventually!

  • One of our dogs had the same issue a few months ago.  We took him to the vet & got him some drops.  Of course, getting drops in his eyes didn't work because he fought us so badly.  Eventually we got oral meds and it cleared up.  Hope he's better soon!

  • I'm taking him in to see the vet this morning, so hopefully I'll be able to get some drops or something.  He's not acting like it's bothering him, but it just looks uncomfortable because it gets more and more red as the day goes on.  Poor puppy...thanks for the suggestions!
  • Hello, I know this post is yeaaaaars old, but my 7 month Frenchie is having the same issues (visible third eyelid, redness, eye boogers haha). What did your vet say about it? He is going next week for something else so I'm going to ask her about his eyes, but don't want to wait in case there is something I could do now to treat it. Thanks so much for any advice!
