To Start or Not To Start

We're dealing with a little situation here in Chicago, but I think it's a pretty universal topic that might spark a good conversation...

If your team has already clinched it's playoff spot and it's seed, do you play your starters for remaining regular season games?

On one hand, if you start them, you run the risk of injury going into the post-season.  But on the other hand, if you don't start them you run the risk of your players being "rusty" come post-season.  Especially if you've earned a first round bye.

Discuss.  Big Smile

Re: To Start or Not To Start

  • Same thing here in New England and people are really torn with their opinions about it. The Pats had a similar situation last year going into the final game of the season, they started Welker, and he blew out his knee. That's all I can think about. While I feel like they could use the playing time this week, especially with the first round bye, I'm worried that we could end up with serious injuries again, and for what? I don't think it's worth it. I'm hoping to see Brady on the sideline, but that rarely happens.

  • It depends on the team. I'm an Eagles fan and I think Vick should sit out this game because he was pretty banged up during the last one. Also, 2nd string Kolb is a decent QB and should be "warmed up" if he needs to play any pre-season games!

  • Indy is always going to preserve Peyton's record, no matter what crap they spew.  He will start every game unless he's physically unable to.  But there was one game near the end of last season where they played in white out conditions and he played for a good part of the first half before coming out, and they wanted to act like they were trying to protect him by taking him out at that point.  No, if you wanted to protect him, he would have played the first series ONLY (if that) and then he would have been out.  In those conditions, you're risking much more.

But I'm the fan that's bitter that they didn't go for the perfect record, so I wish they would have played their starters much more than they did at the end of last year's season.

Yah I would be a little bitter about that too. Didn't NE come close to that a few seasons ago but they decided to be in tip top shape for the play offs? I can't remember but I agree, that would annoy me!

  • I think numbers-wise, it's actually better for teams to play all the starters because it keeps the momentum going.  I believe I saw something on this last season when Indy was contemplating pulling their starters - that teams that take a break get off the roll they are on - which is sometimes why teams without the first round bye can do well in playofffs (see Giants a few seasons ago).

Problem is - you have the issue like PP mentioned - what happens if someone gets really hurt, i.e. Welker?

Patriots went undefeated until they got to the Super Bowl - and then lost.  I really don't see Belichik resting players that much, but maybe after the Welker thing he'll change his mind.
