I am a fairly regular poster on other boards, but this is an intensely personal matter, and I know people IRL under my other screen name.
Recent family drama revealed a lot of new information about my FIL, that was not known before. We haven't gotten the complete story, but I don't know what to believe. Is there a way to find out about a particular court case, from about 20 years ago? It relates to child pornography.
I am hoping beyond hope that this isn't true, and it makes me sick to think of the possibility. We don't have children yet, but if what I found out was true, I don't think my children would ever know their grandfather. Yes, I am that judgemental.
Re: How do I find information about FIL?
If you know where the case was heard, it's relatively simple; just go to the court clerk's office in that courthouse and ask to see the file. If you are uncertain as to the jurisdiction, you can go to the court clerk's offices in the county and federal courthouses where you live and ask them to search.
There is a way to search the internet federal system for criminal cases; not always a way to search for court cases in internet state/county cases.
have you tried googling his name with the word criminal, or pornography, next to it?
I did google his name, but not with those words. He has a very generic name, and I found someone else on the state sex offender registry, same name, not the same man (it had a picture)
This case was in the federal court, so I will try there as well.
if you cannot locate an online service for federal courts, pm me and I'll see if I can do a search if you want. It'd be tomorrow before I could get it.
Yes you can. If you go to your states court docket, it will be there. It will give you all of the details of whatever he went to court for - it is public record.
I don't blame you... I'd be searching too. Good luck and I hope that it works out.
If this is the case, wouldn't he have to register as a sex offender? Depending on your state, and what level sex offender he is, this is public information. You can search by his name and/or address and see what pops up.
I'd also be googling the hell out of him and see what comes up - hopefully for the sake of the family, it isn't true.
"Your good friend Miranda has just taken a piece of cake out of the garbage and eaten it. You will probably need this information when you check me into the Betty Crocker Clinic"
I have searched, and searched, and haven't been able to find anything. A brief background:
The story has always been that FIL's employer "set him up" and that the so called pictures were of H and his siblings, but those "never existed" according to the IL's. H and his siblings went into foster care, while they dealt with everything. FIL did have to register as a sex offender, but I am not sure the whole deal. He lost some licensures because of it. From what I understand he plead guilty, and they got the kids back.
Well in a recent email, MIL indicated that FIL actually purchased these pictures, and ended up in Federal Court. That is what's prompting me to check things out, as many other things they have said have turned out to be completely untrue.
Wisconsin has an online searchable database for court cases... http://wcca.wicourts.gov/index.xsl
I don't know how far back it goes (I would guess not 20 years) or if it is entirely complete. I don't think many other states have this.
