planting ideas for a preschool-kindergarten garden

I'm trying to think of plants that will grow quickly enough that we can harvest them before school ends at the end of May.

We can start planting things like snap peas and onions in Feb. according to the ag extension guide. The other choices for febuary planting don't seem all that exciting (spinach, kale, etc). In March we can plant potatoes, beets and carrots.

any suggestions or just do a big patch of snap peas

Re: planting ideas for a preschool-kindergarten garden

  • Google it. There's a midwestern university- maybe Iowa?- that produced a booklet on this very topic. I helped an Eagle Scout design one for his service project at his old nursery school. They also did a Thanksgiving Garden in the same space.

Another fun and educational idea is a salad bowl container garden for delivery at Mother's day with lettuces, radishes and carrots. Herbs can be done this was as well but would need to be indoors.

  • radishes are one of the first seeds (directly planted) to germinate and mature so definitely do those...there are lots of fun shapes & colors to try.  kohlrabi would also mature before May (at least it does here) and it looks kind of cool (especially the purple ones) and it tastes kind of like cauliflower, IMO.

you could also do edible flowers like violas, nasturtiums, etc.

  • Excellent idea with the edible flowers!  Just be sure the kids know they can't just go around eating any flowers.  That's the only issue I've run into with this.

  • I know that lettuce/spinach, etc do not seem so exciting, but to the kids, it would be really exciting and cool that they could eat them.  I have planted lettuce seeds with my preschooler and he thinks it is awesome.
