May be moving, where to live?

There is about an 80% chance we are moving down to Ft Lauderdale for H's job (yes!!!) so we're trying to look into things and see how much we're looking at for rent.

We're looking for an apartment, not a house yet. We're looking out from Ft Lauderdale because we think it could be a little cheaper. H doesn't want to drive for more than 30 minutes.

I was looking at Plantation, and that looks really nice but really expensive. Then I was thinking Davie. I know we DON'T want Lauderhill (poverty at 19%). We could live in Ft Lauderdale, if we can find something reasonable. We also thought about Pembroke Pines and Sunrise.

Know of any of these places? Are they nice?  Can you think of any others we could research?

 Thanks in advance!

Re: May be moving, where to live?

  • Hi!  Congrats on H's job :)

There are plenty of affordable apartments in all of those areas that you mentioned.  You mention Lauderhill not being a nice area, but even within the other areas you mentioned, there are good and not so good neighborhoods.  Also, traffic can be killer in the Lauderdale area from any of those cities.  Davie and Sunrise are both a little west, traffic getting back east can be awful.  Do you know approximately where he'll be working in Lauderdale?

You could probably expand your search a little more north to Deerfield Beach or Boca Raton.  In decent traffic, depending on where in Lauderdale, it's a half an hour commute.  Plantation is a nice area, but can be expensive.  Hollywood has some decent areas, but again, have to be careful with some neighborhoods.

Are schools of immediate need or interest to you and H?  That may change where you look too.

Hope this was helpful to you!

  • I would recommend meeting with a real estate agent and having her take you around. I came down from Boston with print outs of different apartments I found online and had no idea the good and bad parts of town, and where i wanted to live. We met with a realtor the next day and she found us an awesome apartment in a nice area of coral springs for pretty cheap. I find that living out west is nice, the commute is about 30 minutes, but depending on where in ft lauderdale the job is it could take more or less time.
  • I used to live in Coral Springs and I liked it. There are a lot of apartment communities there that are decent. It's more west and north of Plantation, but the area is pretty nice and it's close to shopping, restaurants, etc. I used to intern at a place in Ft. Lauderdale when I was in school and it only took me about 30 minutes to get there.
  • Most of the areas you have suggested are very expensive. Pembrook Pines is very nice but rent is around 1200-1700 for a 1 bedroom. Look on rent.com and apartment.com. they have good apartments and you can find reasonable housing it just takes time. Good luck
