Dog jumping chainlink fence

I have a 1.5 year old beagle and she figured out how to climb our chain link fence and escape from our yard.  Is there anything we can do besides get a whole new fence? I really am at a loss :( Thanks.

Re: Dog jumping chainlink fence

  • Are you leaving her outside unattended?  If you are, I'd suggest not leaving her outside alone, because it sounds like she's bored and finding ways to entertain herself (i.e., climbing the fence).
  • When she is escaping, are you out there with her or did you leave her unattended?  If it's the latter, the easiest is to supervise and use a long line if needed.
  • She isn't unattended.  We saw her do it. We are always out there with her.

  • Also, we just took her out to go potty on a leash and she even tried climbing it then.  So I don't think its a boredom thing.

  • Then I also suggest buying a long leash - she can still run around and play, but you can keep her inside the yard.

    Here's an example.

  • Also, we just took her out on a leash to go potty.  She went straight to the fence and tried to climb it.  So I don't think its a boredom thing??

If she's on a leash, then you're in control. Don't allow her to go to the fence.

  • Right.

I am just trying to see if there is a way that we can let her off the leash in the yard so she can run and play.  But it looks like that might not be possible.

  • I am no help, but I think it's hilarious that she is actually able to climb the fence, even when leashed.

  • It's really weird that we have had her for a year and just now figured out how that she can climb it.

I would be quite disappointed if I had a fenced yard that I couldn't let my dogs play in off-leash, so hopefully someone will have some other suggestions for you.  Does she always go to a specific area of the fence?  Is there maybe something (animal, scent) on the other side that is attracting her?  How tall is the fence?

  • How fast is she climbing it?  You might try training it out of her.  Put her on a short leash with you, when she touches the fence give the down command-lure with yummy treat and praise like crazy.  Rinse.  repeat.  alot...

Then you can graduate to long lead, reduce treats, and eventually she should be able to be recalled immediately.  If she won't be broke of this desire at least she will have a reliable recall to avoid it.

  • It's a three foot fence.  I was hoping there could be some sort of extension or something we could put on top?  I don't even know if there is such a thing.

Yes, she always go to the same spot to jump it.  There doesn't appear to be anything on the other side that she wants.

She climbs it pretty fast...maybe 5 seconds to get over?

Thanks for your suggestion.  We can try that.

  • Looks like you could try to install a DIY "leaner" pretty inexpensively: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com/clova.html

Also, a google search of the term "fence height extension" had many results that may be helpful for you.  Good luck!

ETA: I just skimmed it, but this article seemed to have a lot of good info: http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_FenceJumping.php

Well a 3 ft fence would be easy for most any dog to scale plus beagles will follow their nose anywhere so thats not helping.  I don't think there is an extension,  personally id want a 6 ft fence.  I would not let me dogs of leash period in a 3ft area.  you can work on recall, and training not to climb, but I'd keep her on leash.

  • We had the same issue with our guys.  We had new neighbors move next door and kiddy-corner to us and they all have dogs which was very appealing to our guys.  They had also jumped the fence with us outside supervising.

I would work on recall with your dog.  If she's that quick to jump over do not give her the opportunity to.  Make sure she is leashed at all times.

We love having a yard for our guys to play in so while we worked on recall we did a "quick-fix" to increase the height of our fence.  We bought chicken wire and attached it to the top of our fence with wire pieces.  While we'd love a 6 ft privacy fence, this solved the problem temporarily and allowed us to be outside with our dogs and not having the worry of them going over.

  • There was a hilarious video on one of those Animal Planet shows where the pet parents did all kinds of crazy stuff to keep their dog from climbing the fence.  He was really ingenious in all the ways he figured out how to get out and they videotaped what he did.  But the really funny part was, when he did escape, he literally just went to the front door of the house and laid down to wait for them to come home.

My DH and I like to let our cat out into our fully fenced backyard so she can get some exercise and enjoy the outside.  And she likes being outside for 30-60 minutes.  For the last three years, she would always just stay in the yard, but we recently caught her on a few occasions jumping the fence.  Needless to say, it's not safe for her outside our yard, so we regrettably have had to stop letting her out unless we would be outside with her.

We have an interior fence for our dog when we want her to stay out of the laundry area.  It worked GREAT for about three months...until she figured out one day that she can actually jump over it, LMAO.  Once she figured that out, it was completely useless.  So now we have to put up two interior fences, one on top of the other.
