I'm looking for a yoga mat and I'm so confused. Any recommendations?
It looks like natural rubber mats are pretty eco friendly but I'm not sure if I'll be able to deal with the odor.
I've found jute mats with PER (Polymer Environmental Resin), which may or may not contain PVC. Other mats are made from TPE (Thermal Plastic Elastomer) which is supposedly biodegradable and eco-friendly but a newer material....so what unknown health concerns are there?
Has anyone tried a cotton mat? I'm tempted to buy a one and just put it over the basic mats that the Y has. My hands and feet get pretty sweaty so maybe this would work.

Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
Re: Green yoga mats
I reviewed the Aurorae on my blog http://thelocalcook.com/2010/12/30/things-i-love-thursday-yoga/ - eco friendly and not stinky!
I also have one of those skidless Yogitoes and love it for when I go to the gym http://www.yogitoes.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=yogitoes&Product_Code=SYS-TWL
The Yogitoes is interesting. Do you just put it over the mats they have at the gym?
I'll check out the one in your blog, too. Thanks!

I also have the Yogitoes. It was a bit weird getting used to at first, but now I love it. You just put it over your mat and no more sliding onto your belly from down dog. :-)
I have one of the natural rubber mats and I like it okay. When I first got it, it was really stinky, but now (after a year and a half maybe), I don't notice it except on my hands after class. A good washing with soap gets rid of it quickly, though.
I thought about a cotton mat - especially since I have some knee problems and it's so cushy - but I just couldn't rationalize the cost of one since I invested in my last one during wedding planning when I was on a tight budget.
I have the prana E.C.O yoga mat and I love it, although it is made of TPE which you had some concerns about.
