Safari/Jungle 1st Birthday- Ideas Needed!

I know it is stupid and he will never remember but it is my first born's first birthday and I want to celebrate big! I wanted my husband involved so I asked him to pick the theme and he went with Safari/Jungle Animals.  I'm very excited and have a few decor ideas but need ideas for cake/cupcakes, food, entertainment, and activities. Our house is too small to have it here so we'll probably have it at a banquet hall. There will be 60+ guests if we just have close friends and family members including at least 10 children under 10. His birthday is March 4th so nothing can be done outside but I'm thinking of an indoor bounce house.  We did that when I threw my nephew his Mickey Mouse theme 1st birthday last year and even had Mickey show up!  I would like to do something huge for my son's party but can't exactly have a elephant, lion, or giraffe show up!  So please give me your biggest ideas, thanks in advance!

Re: Safari/Jungle 1st Birthday- Ideas Needed!

  • When we did a Tarzan theme for the two year old nephews (twins), My sister and I decorated the cake with animals on parade (animal crackers around the outside of the cake interspersed with jelly beans.   We served bugs on a log (celery spread with peanut butter and topped with raisins, sultanas and Craisins), chocolate dipped bananas, tropical smoothie punch (orange juice, bananas and frozen strawberries blended in a blender), coconut topped shortbread, orange wedges and dried mangos.

We decorated with Disney theme paper goods.   We took the kids on a lion hunt (the clapping game from nursery school) and a nature safari.  We picked up cheap one-use cameras and went looking for animals in the woods on safari.    We had a tarzan-yell contest (outdoors!!!) and behave like a monkey contest.    We had 8 kids plus our two nephews and they had a great time.  The parents were thrilled that we had tuckered the kids out. x

  • have you considered hosting the party at the zoo? I don't know about the zoo in your area  but sometimes they have an area devoted to children.
  • All your ideas sound like fun, I just wish our party was in the summer.  Here in Northeast Ohio we might still have snow in March!  I think I am going to take your food ideas and try to adapt some of the games to make them inside friendly!

  • Oriental Trading has some cute masks in a jungle theme.

    What about Rainforest Cafe?

  • DD wanted a jungle theme for her 3rd Birthday, and that's what she got.  I got a TON of stuff from Oriental Trading.  We got all the different blow up animals, trees,  and birds.  The room came out AWESOME!  We put different colored table covers on the tables with a bowl of animal crackers.  We also put little plastic snakes and balloons on the tables.

For entertainment we got a local "animal guy".  He brought about 15 different animals.  It was great.

For the goody bags we stuck to the theme.  I included little flash lights, little jungle themed coloring books..again.. it was all bought on Oriental Trading.

    Good Luck!
