Re: Change of Pace

  • Thanks for asking! Unfortunately, the answers are "I don't know" and "I don't know"!  Stick out tongue

Gosh I really wish I did though!  DH's first day at State will be January 18th.  On his second day, the 19th, he'll get his Bid List.  That list will have every possible place we might be assigned.  We'll have two days to rank order the places on that list into low, medium, and high preferences.

But the really big, awesome, important day will be February 1st.  That is his class' Flag Day.  It's actually a really neat ritual.  All of the people in his training class will get together with their friends and families for a ceremony.  They'll call the name of each country that was on the Bid List in alphabetical order (I think) and as they bring forward the flag of that country, they'll call out the name of the person being assigned there and that person will come to the stage to accept the flag.  Talk about pressure!  You find out where you'll be living for the next two years and then immediately have to put on a stoney face regardless of whether you are thrilled or terrified!

Once we know where we're going we'll also know all of the specifics about how long his training will be, exactly how much money he'll be making, what kind of car we need to buy, how much stuff we'll be able to ship, whether or not I'll have a chance of getting a job there, what kind of school DD will be going to next year...I think you get the picture for why I am very antsy this month!  So much hinges on the question of "where".

While we won't know exactly how long we'll be here until we know "where", the earliest estimate is that we'll be here until the end of April.  It should be at least that long and possible a few months longer, but we will definitely be overseas by the end of the summer!

  • I'm nosey, and i'm butting in. Oh my, I'm antsy just reading all that! Yikes!

How scary, and exciting all at the same time!!

How does Imogen feel about moving? Do you talk to her about it?

  • Big changes indeed!  I have my fingers crossed for you that you'll get stationed in an acceptable location.

I will be keeping up with what's going on with you guys.  While I don't think living overseas is necessarily for me, I admire what you guys are doing!  You guys will have such an exciting life ahead of you!

  • I agree, I can't wait to find out where your family will move to and I can't wait to hear about that Flag ceremony!
  • Jena, so far DD is super excited.  We got the kids a globe for Christmas and we talk about the fact that we'll be moving and she'll be going to a new school next year all the time.  I honestly don't worry about her too much.  She is one of the most adaptable kids in the world.  I was marveling about it yesterday when we were at the mall in one of those kids' play areas.  Within 5 minutes she had made a new friend and she and the other little girl were running around and playing together like they had known each other forever.  She's just really outgoing and sweet like that and loves to meet and get to know new people and try new things.

Kathy, I hope that we get a good first post too (of course)!  We've been talking strategy though and preparing for the possibility of an unaccompanied tour (unlikely but possible).  Believe it or not, if we had the choice, we'd choose a place like Iraq over somewhere else unaccompanied like Guinea.  There is so much that goes into bidding.  I don't think I'll be allowed to share his bid list on the board on the 19th, but I'll definitely share on the 1st when we know where we'll be going!

  • This all sounds so exciting! The Flag ceremony sounds so cool. I can't wait to hear about it, and to find out where you guys are going!
