Lease Renewal Question

So, our lease is up Jan 31 and we've gotten no renewal, no contact from the landlord about whether or not we intend to stay or go, nothing.  Last time our lease was up we had to call them because we knew for sure we wanted to stay for another 2 year term and we hadn't heard from them so about 45 days before the lease expired we contacted them and they sent us a renewal.  We want to stay for 6 more months but we are pretty sure that we will get a large rent raise if we get a renewal.  I read the lease again and it does not say anything about month-to-month rent after the lease expires, but it does say something about leaving the property at the end of the lease terms.

Is it our responsibility to get in touch with the management company about a 6 month renewal, or should we just say nothing and hope we fall into a month-to-month situation if we just keep paying the rent?  For reference, we get a computer generated rent statement every month in the mail.  What do you think is the worst possible scenario here...that we'd be forced to move early (seems like this wouldn't really happen since it would make more sense to keep tenants who want to be there...)?

We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

Re: Lease Renewal Question

  • I would contact someone about it just to clarify. You wouldn't want them to renew a year term, if you only want 6 months...and you also don't want someone else moving in:) I would think ever lease is a bit different, so what happens in my building may not be the same as yours.
