Cloth Diaper Help

Can someone PLEASE just tell me what brand to get?  We know that we want to do AIOs, and I'd like snaps not Velcro, but thats all I got...  Every time I start to research actual brands I get overwhelmed; they all seem like they are the same.

Recommendations, advise, anything would be great.  Thank you ladies!

ETA:  We're all about doing things on the cheap, so economical suggestions would be even more appreciated.

  • Tay, I have asked a boat load of cd questions to Shanon before so many she will come on or you could message her on FB.  I know the moms on here that cd would be more then happy to answer questions.  They have always been so helpful before =)

  • We cloth diaper part time and really like it. I like Bum Genuis AIO. The sized ones. They work great and are very easy to use. We just recently started having leaks, but I'm pretty sure it is because we need to move up to the large. I'm just to cheap to order them. Gotta do that soon!

And I think a PP might have mentioned checking out the Cloth Diaper board on the Bump. They are all super helpful and not snarky at all. :)

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions!

  • We are doing cloth diapering now.  Granted its only been a little over 2 weeks..... we have a few pocket diapers instead of AIOs, but he's still too little to really fit into them yet. They say usually babies need to be about 10 lbs.  That being said, we've been using prefolds and covers for now, but we are changing his diapers constantly (sometimes 2-3 times within an hour or 2)  and he's a heavy wetter so he saturates the diapers.  I won't lie, I'm not loving the prefolds, but DH is insistent we keep with it.  It's probably my sleep deprivedness coming out.  We've been playing around with trying different insert/liners to help soak up the urine and off his skin since he's gotten a touch of a diaper rash from the multiple poops and saturated diapers.  Can't wait until he fits into the AIOs/Pockets so then he'll have that layer to help pull the wet off him.  So you may want to look into doing disposables until he fits into your AIOs.

The brands we have are bumgenious and fuzzibunz. They seem to have the most positive ratings on the CD board and we went with the pocket design so we can add additional inserts later as needed to create more absorbancy if needed.  All of our one size diapers are snaps only, but I did buy 2 used pocket diapers for newborn for when we go out and about that are velcro and although the velcro is a little worn, it is easier to get it to fit him now.

Good luck!  We also went to zoolikins in Scottsdale diaper class for an hour one Saturday so that DH and I could touch/see the different diapers and ask questions about the different systems.

  • From researching over the last few years, it doesn't sound like you can go wrong with Bum Genius for your purposes.

Jill at BabyRabies has LOTS of information on her blog about them.  http://www.babyrabies.com/category/going-green/cloth-diapers/

We'll be starting out with prefolds and kissaluvs with covers and then moving over to BGs when Bugger gets big enough for them.

Don't be scared of the CD board!  Even if you don't want to post yourself, there are often a ton of questions similar to yours over there.  That board is very helpful though.

I know you've already got a lot of feedback, but I post on parenting after a loss every day and no one snarks there :) I dont think they'd be snarky to you for asking about diapers lol... I just dont see how that could go wrong Stick out tongue

i heart my prefolds. i bought a yard of microfleece and cut it up into rectangles and lay it into the diaper before i put it on dominic. the fleece works like a stay dry liner and will keep the moisture off his little bumWink

  • tay, i like the bg's aio's but like you i'm not a huge fan of velcro. it's easy in the beginning though when they're tiny. it's when they get older and start to rip them off that it becomes a problem :)

i really would recommend doing prefolds and covers in the beginning (and btw this is a suuuper cheap option). you could also do a fitted and a cover, but those get pretty pricey especially for how quickly the baby will grow out of them.your little one going to be soooo tiny and you'll be going through diapers like no other. it's nice to be able to re-use the cover and then just throw the prefold into the wetbag/diaper pail/whatev. and then you can get some aio's or pockets when the baby packs on some pounds and sell the prefolds and covers you used. newborn stuff usually sells quickly on the cd sites.

i know it's so overwhelming, there are so many options. i really had a crappy experience at zoolikins the last time i went, the lady there was super rude to me. but i would recommend going and seeing them in person. i have a bunch of different crap and i'm sure girls here do also, so if you want to see anything of mine just lmk!

a lot of people aren't a fan but i go where it's cheap...there are plenty of nice quality, inexpensive diapers made overseas (actually sold on ebay) that have treated me very well!

Thank you all SOOOO much for the feedback and help!

I think I've resolved that we'll do Kissaluvs and Thirstys for the newborn stage (thank you Jaye & Stac!), and Bum Genius for when my babe gets bigger (thank you so much the link Shan!!!  I'm going to buy some tonight!)

Shan, did you use prefolds right from the start?  What brand did/do you use when D was a newborn?  I'd LOVE to do the prefolds b/c of the price, but I also want us to like CDing.  I'm worried the prefolds will overwhelm us at first.  I thought if we went with the easiest system we'd have a better chance of sticking with it.

I think we should have a CD gtg Big Smile

the thirsty covers are awesome for nb's! also check out bummis super whisper wraps, they're cute and cheap too.

i've only been cloth diapering for about a year, so he was about 9 months old or so.

i use nickis diapers imagine prefolds. i freaking love them, so soft and fluffy. i really don't mind doing a little extra work and would rather pay less for my diapers, kwim? but i'm kind of a cheap bastard sometimes. what i like about the prefolds is that you can do the different folds on the baby when they're little to contain the poo, but when they get older you can trifold the prefold into a cover and it's super easy. that's what i do with dominic now. i don't have many aio's or pockets, because it annoys me that i can use those only once and then they're dirty. i love being able to reuse covers, plus i love all of the cute colors and patterns you can get Yes. i know this isn't everybody's preference especially if you'll be working...you will usually want to have pockets or aio's for at least the care provider.

  • TY for the fleece suggestion. I made it out of the house today and hit up joan's for fleece.  I really want to love the prefolds so hoping this will work.  Also went and bought some of the BG3.0s.  Hooray for discontinued discounts!

make sure you have the correct fleece. microfleece is super duper thin, and not the fluffy kind which will cause repelling. i wasn't able to find it at joannes or walmart here so i had to order it online. if you want, i have some i can send to you if you want to check it out!
