Can I run this party theme past you ladies?

So here is my thought for Elijah's birthday party.

He loves Toy Story, so we will obviously have a Toy Story Theme.  So, I was thinking of having a Toy Story Movie Party.  Complete with popcorn, maybe kids come in PJ's, movie theater food (minus so much of the candy), hot dogs, soft pretzels, nachos/cheese, etc.

Also, since I have a small tv (have not upgraded to the flat screen world) I would rent one from those rent a center type places for the week. (plus the superbowl is the day after his party!).

I even asked Marcos if he would build a platform for my large couch to make it stadium seating like.

So, my question is, do you think this would be good for kids ages 3-11?

Since we are not doing big entertainment, of using an external venue, I think I can keep this relatively cheap.

Thanks!

Re: Can I run this party theme past you ladies?

  • I don't have a ton of experience but - will you get 3-11 yr olds to sit for a movie at a party? I think the theme is a good idea, but I'm not a fan of renting the TV and showing the movie. Is the party going to be running into the evening? if not, I would probably skip the Pj's too, and maybe just say that they could dress up like the characters if they want or have the stuff at home already.
  • I think its a really cute idea...I'm not sure if all the kids will sit through it though. I wouldn't go through the hassle of renting a TV, I'd have the movie playing on your TV for those that want to sit and watch but also have some games set up for the kids that don't. When you are little and think Birthday Party, you think running around like crazy and having fun.

Now, if that was my party at lets say 12 and you were playing Dirty Dancing, you would be the cool mom!!

  • Sounds good to me! How big is your tv? I think maybe you could skip renting a tv b/c like Kelly said they may not be interested in sitting 100% of the movie but you could just have it playing on your tv...(unless you want a big tv for the super bowl...) And along those lines you could skip building a platform...

Do you have anyone that has a projector? That maybe an easier option too then renting a tv...

Rent a popcorn machine from Taylor Rental! We have done it twice now and it's always a HUGE hit!

  • I think the theme sounds great!  But I agree that you might want some games and other activities set up in case some of the kids aren't into the movie, but definitely have the movie playing.  Sounds fun!

  • I like it!  I think a lot depends on the other specifics of your invite list. Is this mostly family (cousins) with other adults as well? I don't think you'd be able to pull it off if it was just you and Marco, but if there are more adults you could probably have stations with different activities including watching the movie.
  • OOH!! I like the idea of renting a popcorn machine rather than a TV. Thats a good one!!

  • Thanks so much for your input ladies!  My brother also was not sure about having kids sit thru a movie.

There will be other adults there as well, mostly family, with a few friends (now that I think we had 20 for his Halloween party!).

My tv is like a 32 inch regular box type tv.   So, maybe I will just play the movie during the party and plan some games etc.

Elijah got a Toy Story Bowling game for Christmas I could use for a game too.  Along with some of the usual party games, Pinata etc.

I just really like the idea of it being a movie based party, but given his age, you ladies are probably right.

Guess I will save this one for the later years!

  • My other concern is too that a lot of kids (like mine) have probably already seen the movie and may not be as willing to sit through it.  Mine own it and watch it several times a week and barely sit through it at my house.

I say skip the cost of building the platform and renting the TV and definitely go for the popcorn maker.  Kids love that!  Our dance instructor bought a big one for her Christmas recital and they were setting it up at the end of Melinda's last dance class and the kids were crowded around it just staring at it.  It's magical I tell ya!
