Hi! My husband and I are thinking about going to China this year. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions?

Specifically, did you go with a tour group or on your own?

Did you find it hard to get around without speaking Chinese (I assume you don't.. but sorry if I'm wrong)?

Do you have a guide book you can recommend?

 Any general tips or advice?

  • Hi! I'm happy to answer your questions. We had such a great trip- I'm so excited about the prospect of you going!

We went on our own, no tour group. My husband does speak Mandarin, but he actually almost never used it (just to make chit-chat, and maybe once or twice in a cab for directions). I don't speak a word, and I feel like I could have made it if DH hadn't been there. We booked one individual tour for our Great Wall hike, and everything else (in my opinion) is pretty easy to see with convenient subway systems, lots of picture menus in restaurants, help from hotel staff who are happy to write phrases/addresses for you to use in cabs or whatever you might need, etc. It might be a little bit of work in some instances, but it's definitely do-able.

We used the Lonely Planet guide a lot, and the Tripadvisor message boards were probably the most helpful thing for me when planning.

Where in China are you thinking of going? We stayed in the most AMAZING hotel in Beijing if you're looking for recommendations. I'm sure I can talk your ear off about our experience and give you all kinds of more detailed recs if you want them!  I don't know if you've already read the trip summary in my blog, but I wrote a little bit about our experience in each city we went to (the entries are a couple of posts down, but if you scroll they're there). Good luck planning, and be sure to share along the way!

  • Thanks for the info! I'm not sure exactly where we want to go just yet. Obviously the great wall and Beijing but otherwise I honestly dont know much about China. Hopefully after the trip, I'll know a lot more :)

I've been checking out tripadvisor so far since that my goto planning place.

I've checked out your blog which is why I paged you :) Great pictures!!

I'll page you again when I have more of an idea of where we are going to go and see what you can recommend. Thanks!
