Greenhouse question

THe house that we are trying to buy has a small greenhouse that's included in the sale of the house.

I live in NOrthern New JErsey, and wonder can I grow things all winter long or will it get too cold even in there without heat?

Re: Greenhouse question

  • I grew up in Bergen County and my neighbors had a small greenhouse on their property that they used for hardening off and some seed starting in March.  It was unheated but it did have electricity and I think they used seed mats to keep the seedlings warm.  The rest of the year, they really used it for potting and storage of all their garden accessories.  If you were looking for year round use, you would definitely need some sort of heating system in there.  You do here in the DC area and we are about 10 degrees warmer than you.
  • There are ways to use an unheated greenhouse all year long (but, really, winter is going to mean lettuces & kale, not tomatoes).  The book Winter Harvest Handbook talks about how to use an unheated greenhouse in the winter:
