LED Light Bulbs

Hello ! My husband and I purchased a new home and I would like to switch the light bulbs to LED's. This is because I am uncomfortable with the mercury in CFL bulbs. If you have this type of light bulb in your home how do you like them ? What are the pro's and con's ? Thanks for your input :)

Re: LED Light Bulbs

  • I don't like the mercury in CFLs either, but we did those a few years ago because there weren't any indoor LEDs on the market.  Are they out now?  I only see LED christmas lights.

  • Yes, you can find LED light bulbs at home improvements stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot. They are considerably more expensive than CFL's which is why I was looking for opnions before I purchase some.  Thanks for your response :)

  • We were looking at them at Home Depot a few weeks ago and didn't buy any because they only had up to 40 or 60 watt equivalents.  That's a really dim light bulb.  I have a hard enough time getting through the winter with our apartment well lit.
  • I haven't seen any actual LED light bulbs that will go into conventional/standard lamps and light fixtures- I have only seen light fixtures that have LEDs.  I want to add some under counter lighting and Ikea has several LED options.

Also we have a pony wall (it doesn't go to the ceiling) which is also the top of our pantry and fridge and I want to put LED rope lighting up there- I bought it but need to have some wiring done.  I bought warm white and it looks normal on vs. the blue white that a lot of LED white lights are.

  • I actually bought some for an outdoor post lamp at our house.  DH insists on keeping it on (I switch it off every morning and don't like to turn it on unless we are NOT home).  Buy "splurging" on the LEDs I feel we've come to a compromise.  I bought a "cheap" brand at WalMart (and I'm in Northern Kentucky so if we have them I would THINK other places would too).  They were about $6 PER bulb.  I checked HD and Lowe's.  Approximately $15 EACH.  We are putting our house on the market next spring so I don't care if the bulbs only last 5 years as opposed to 10.  I won't be there.
