Long Beach, Help where to live?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me/advice to where to live in Long Beach. I need to be close to the Veteran's Hospital because I do take the bus back and forth. Also, I am not a student nor party with the college students at Cal State Unv. at Long Beach. We want a secure and safe apartment around 1500 a month. Please help. Thanks so much!

Also, is long beach down town safe to walk around?

Re: Long Beach, Help where to live?

  • Hello! I moved to LB 5 years ago from LA. Long Beach is a unique city in the sense that the demographics can change drastically block to block! The Veterans Hospital is in a neighborhood called Los Altos, which is great (and so is the area called Park Estates). I don't know what your comfort zone is like, but I can generally recommend staying southeast. $1500 can get you a good sized apartment or a shoebox, depending on where you look. Price ranges can be high (Naples, Belmont Shore, Ocean Bvd) or quite low (north long beach, west side). I initially moved to Bluff Heights, which I loved everything about EXCEPT the parking! CA Heights and Bixby are good neighborhoods as well, but not as close to the hospital. I know you don't want to be around college kids, but considering the school is literally next to the hospital, you will most likely get young neighbors. Not all of us college aged kids are bad, though! :) Just keep an open mind and when you speak with a manager, be sure to tell them that. Also, remember that neighbors change-- either for better or worse!

I worked in property management, and I can tell you the fail proof way to find what you are looking for is to forget craigslist or other sites like apartments.com-- just drive or bike around and you will find what you are looking for. Most privately owned buildings don't want a lot of unnecessary showings (a sure thing when they advertise on the internet), so by taking in initiative they might hook you up with a better deal. Another great tip: if you're on the fence about a certain area, go to the closest supermarket. This is where you will get the best feel for your community. See what kinds of people patronize that store and I guarantee you'll know if it's the right place for you or not. If you need any other advice about the area, let me know! Good luck!

  • Long Beach is awesome!!! I've lived in the LB my whole life (29 yrs).  There are a lot of really great neighborhoods and some not so great ones. The areas I recommend are:  Los Altos (next to VA hospital, very family oriented neighborhood, close to Trader Joe's), Belmont Shore/ heights or the Peninsula, (super cute, lots of restaurants and shops), Bluff park/Alamitos beach (more hipster kind of vibe.  Lots of cute little coffee shops, yoga studios, wine bars) Downtown but stay close to Ocean blvd and no farther East than Chestnut. Bixby Knoll and Signal hill are also nice.  They are farther from the VA then the others that I mentioned.

I hope this helps you...If you have any questions concerning specific Neighborhoods or Streets let me know.  I know LB like the back of my hand!

    GOOD LUCK!!!Smile
