another surprise party- need ideas

Hi. I posted this on my local board but thought I'd try it out here too.

I'm planning a surprise birthday party for my husband in February- he is turing 35. I want to have it at our house with friends and family. Any creative party ideas?

I read somewhere about posting up a timelime of his life, and allowing guests to fill it in with memories. Any themes you can think of, or are themes over done? The only thing I really came up with was a Mexican fiesta with margaritas and a taco bar. Or else something "cheese" themed. (We like cheeses, and I though of maybe all the food options could be a variation of cheese, ie baked brie, lasagna, cheesecake, etc).

There are a lot of little of little neices and nephews (we don't have any kids yet), and I was thinking of having my 12 year old sister "babysit" them upstairs during the party to keep things under control.

I'm really thinking laid back, but I want it to be special and fun for my husband. And suggestions would be much appreciated!

Re: another surprise party- need ideas

  • You could also do a Hawaiian themed party, beach themed, or a costume themed party (my granny has done things like the 60s, famous couples, etc.).

Also, just how many kids are there? If there are a lot you may need another babysitter than just your 12 year old sister. I used to watch kids from a mother's support group. We had 3 people for 10-12 kids. And sometimes that still felt like not enough.

  • Ohhh!  I really like the Fiesta idea.  I think a BIG hit would be a pinata!

Maybe you can have queso dip with chips, for the cheese-lovers.

You could also have props like sombreros, maracas, a cactus which would make for some fun photo-ops for both kids and adults.  Check out Oriental Trading.

    GL!  Sounds like fun.

  •  Hi!  I agree with the 1st PP re: kids - depending on their ages - may want to hire an entertainer as well...  to do face painting, balloon art etc.  something that will keep them busy.

I also really agree with the 2nd PP re: Fiesta and a Pinata and... Maragaritas.  Would also be really fun and festive.  That also gives you fun colors for the napkins, invitations, table wares etc.  :)

Good Luck and please post pictures/follow-ups after the party.

  • Thanks for all the advice! The ideas are great!
