Mom's having surgery

My mom is having back surgery this coming Wednesday. I'm wondering if anyone has some good ideas for a fun post-surgery care package. She's very active and this is going to be a HUGE buzz kill for her.

Does anyone has some fun creative ideas for things I can get/do for her?

Thanks - have a great weekend.

Re: Mom's having surgery

  • coloring book/crayons, a puzzle book (word find, crosswords, etc.), maybe a gift subscription to something like Netflix so she can watch movies online?  not very fun but offer to do laundry and cleaning once a week?
  • Books, magazines, movies or TV on DVD if she likes those plus maybe some headphones and some music to list to. Ditto PP about crossword puzzles and offering to help her do laundry, vacuuming, or cooking meals.
  • When my mom had back surgery, I gave her some books (she's not much for magazines or puzzles, but those are an option if your mom is), fuzzy slipper socks, and a care package of some of her favorite healthier snacks.  I also arranged to spend several days with her so that I could help her with meals, dishes, laundry, cleaning, washing her hair, checking her bandages, and all of the other things recovery made it harder for her to do.

She's having double knee surgery next month, and I'll do the same then.

  • All great suggestions so far!

What about a Kindle or other ebook reader? If she likes to read then even if she's alone, she can get another book via the Internet.

Also maybe a high quality thermos so she can keep some hot tea/coffee/cocoa warm near her (I'm assuming she won't be able to move much).

If she's like me, I love a lot of NPR shows and if laid up would appreciate a high quality radio or even better, an iPod or something to download the shows to.

A special pillow of some sort?

  • Snacks that she can keep by her side so she doesn't have to get up (like energy bars, etc.).

    Magazines, suduko puzzles.

A "husband" pillow - - the big firm pillow with arms so she can sit up in bed.

A lap desk with "pockets" on the side to hold snacks, the remote, reading material, etc.

Towlettes so she can wipe her face / clean her hands without getting up.

((HUGS)) I hope everything goes well!

  • How sweet of you to do this!

I second others' suggestions for coloring books, magazines, e-reader, etc. What about some movies or old tv shows from decades ago on DVD? Or old photo albums for her to look through? Cheesy magazines (Enquirer!)

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions. Here's the basket I made for her. I did buy a few more "rags" to put in there (Star, Enquirer). Let's hope and pray the surgery goes smoothly on Wednesday!
