Harbaugh to NFL!

I'm actually really happy for him! The 49ers are my 2nd NFL team and I really think he will do good things there. Also, his family has to be happy that they are staying in the area. I think that rarely happens with football coaching changes. What does everyone else think?

Re: Harbaugh to NFL!

  • Living in Michigan land, I'm happy for him.  I know he really wanted to coach in the NFL one day & even though some wanted him to come back to his alma mater, I didn't cuz I knew that in a few years he'd be gone to do what he really had his heart set on.

The sports talk station named 2 or 3 other people who changed jobs & didn't have to move, so it's very rare, but good for him!

  • I'm not surprised.  When I spoke to him briefly in December (the Heisman candidates came through JFK and I work for the airline they flew in on), he was the only coach that didn't have university gear on - he was wearing Ravens gear.  Which was pretty telling IMO given that everyone on staff was wearing Auburn, Oregon, Boise State and Stanford.  I made a joke about competing with his brother John (I know the family via Tom Crean's time at Marquette) and he kind of brushed it off.

Seriously? He wasn't wearing Stanford stuff? Wow. IMO, that's ridiculous.

Not at all.  I mentioned that to DH and he was surprised too - they're there to represent their universities, and he was the only coach not wearing apparel.  (DH actually advised me to not post that detail lest by some small chance someone affiliated with another university read it and fan the flames more than they already were.  Not that it was any secret since there were tons of people there anyway)

Wow...I totally agree...they are there to represent the university they work for.

If our coach ever did something like that I would be so upset.

  • As a 49er fan, I just hope he has better luck then the last few coaches.  I'm tired of all these losing, mediocre years.

    Me too!

  • Harbaugh's brother is the Raven's head coach, so I do not really find it odd that he had on Ravens gear at some point. I would not think they would need to be in university gear every waking moment.

As a Niners fan I am excited about the change. I hope he does well.

Every waking moment? No, of course not. But arriving/being in New York with one of your players who is up for the Heisman? I think that's definitely a university gear time...

I can see both sides. On the one end, you'd expect a coach who's flying with his Heisman trophy candidate player to wear university gear - or at least something more neutral than some other team's logo. But, it was a pro team, and they weren't going to be seen in any official team capacity...so not like he needed to be decked out in Stanford gear. I'd fly in OSU gear, but I always fly in OSU gear [seriously, I do] anyway. :P

I'm not surprised by the move. I kinda figured after talk started about him not coming back that he'd be leaving. I think it's a good move for the team, and I hope it winds up being a positive thing.

I was thinking that too, but the Ravens were away that weekend, so it isn't as if Jim was going to see John coach.  It's an appropriateness issue and being a good representative of the organization who pays you.  Anytime a staffer goes out in public (or at least is in a situation where they're going to be photographed) it's a good practice to wear university gear.
