Moms re: diapers

What kind do you use? DH and I took a gander at diapers at Wal-mart today because a few brands were on sale. Everyone is telling me to start stocking up, so I'd like to hear you opinions please!

Re: Moms re: diapers

  • 1) Stock up already?? Jeez Louise! We bought one pack before she was born. The hospital sent a bunch home with us and then we received a ton as gifts from people.

    2) I like Pampers...the Huggies are all crinkly and just seem uncomfortable!

  • Don't stock up. What would you do with all those diapers if you then found out the baby couldn't wear disposables, or that they didn't work well?
  • After seeing my sister raise 2 kids...she didn't stock up. I recognize everyone is different...but why would you need to?

Diapers aren't going to go out of stock. :o)

  • I would say try several brands. We were given Huggies and Pampers. I much, much, much preferred the Huggies. When we started buying them, we tried out Parents' Choice (Walmart brand) and Luvs, but didn't like them. We like Up & Up (Target brand) *almost* as much as Huggies, and they're way, way cheaper. Since size 2, Nate's been all Up & Up.

My niece was all Pampers, and my nephew is all Luvs - both of which were leaky on Nate. So...you really can't tell what to stock up on until you've tried some. My philosophy is to buy a new box when the old one is half gone. That way, we've never been out of diapers.

Thanks, that was very helpful. We just stood in the diaper aisle going "they all say they do the same thing, how the heck do you know which is better?" Neither of us know squat about diapers, but I guess it's like underwear - everyone's butt is different!

  • I totally agree about stocking up. I can't tell you how many diapers I have left over because JJ outgrew them before we could use them.

We use Pampers. We tried Huggies as well, but it wasn't as comfortable for JJ as the Pampers, and the Pampers fit him better. Just depends though!

  • I wouldn't stock up. We received tons of different diapers at the baby shower that lasted us for a couple of months. We use Pampers baby dry.

  • We received a ton at showers even though we told everyone that we were using cloth.  I would try different brands to see what works. We had to do the same with cloth.

  • So far Pampers NB diapers fit Connor really well. Huggies work but the NB diapers have that little dip cut out to keep away from the belly button before the cord falls off and Connor would leak out of those Huggies even if his little guy was pointed down.

We also bought target NB diapers and they work good! I wouldn't stock up. Before baby comes, if you don;'t get diapers from the shower, then just buy a few different kind of NB diapers and see what works.

We are stocked up on diapers because B had a diaper party and we were given a lot by other people. We have diapers all the way to 3s.

  • Our preference changed over time.  When Luke was little - Pampers were the best - they were softer and just worked better.  We tried Luvs, the Sam's Club brand, Huggies early on and none worked as good as Pampers.

When he started crawling - Huggies seem to work better, but we go back and forth between those and Pampers now.  Just tried out Luvs again since it was on sale - so we'll see how it does for a toddler...

  • Don't stalk up. Buy gift cards to where ever you plan to buy diapers so you?re putting money away for them but not wasting money on something that may not work for your baby. Buy the smallest package until you find what works best for you. Then go bulk.

We have tried almost every diaper out there and we love Targets Up & Up brand the most. Pampers Swaddlers fit Brock the best and we had the fewest leaks but they are pricey. We used the Pampers until he was in size 2 I think then someone told us about the Target ones. Luvs feel like plastic and suck. Huggies didn't fit his legs right so he had blow outs all. the.time. We do use Pampers overnights at night because he doesn't get changed for about 10 hours. His Target diapers didn't leak even with all of that pee but his skin was wet. The overnights are a bit more absorbent and are perfect for night.

  • We tried several brands but we really prefer Pampers. Riley gets diaper rash from anything else, I think they just do a better job of keeping the moisture away from her little bum. I have heard from my sister that once they start crawling, Huggies are better at keeping everything contained. We're right at that juncture and sticking with Pampers for the moment. Check back with me in a month or so ;o)

As far as stocking up...you'll get a good starter collection form showers, I wouldn't worry beyond that. For one thing, you have no idea if your kid is going to fit into NB size from the start or go straight into size 1. Size 1 and size 2 do not last for long (as in they grow out of those sizes quickly) so it's not worth stocking up. I also have friends whose kids have been potty trained early enough that they never made it to size 4, so I guess you never know. Not to mention all the preference issues that come into play when choosing diapers...it's a lot of trial and error!
