Go to youtube, find a video of a song you want and then copy the link to the above site. It will extract the music to an mp3. It will not do the sponsored videos.
It's not free, but we absolutely love Rhapsody. It's a subscription music service, so as long as we have an internet connection (at home, work, etc), we don't have to bother downloading anything, and we have access to whatever music we (or our friends) feel like listening to. Plus, we don't have to store any of it!
We do pay for a slightly more expensive subscription so that we can download some music onto the iPhone, etc. as well and have it available offline.

The video to mp3 thing will work but the sound quality will not be top notch.
Amazon has a HUGE selection of free music, and if you feel like going legit, they have awesome deals every day. Right now they have 1000 albums for only $5, and they have daily deals for $1.99, $3.99, etc.
