Budget Q

I have question re: FSA/HSA accounts. I have a copay for Kasier and I have a FSA that I can get reimbursed for it.

Do I still budget that dollar $$ even though I will get reimbursed for it? Technically the money does come out of my paycheck pretax. I am just trying to get a census of out much we pay OOP when it comes to medical and dental costs.

Re: Budget Q

  • I assume you budget based on your take home pay which already has the money taken out and you're wondering whether to add a line item for medical costs that will get reimbursed?

I would because even though I do an HSA it isn't a ton and it will likely only cover some of our copays, prescriptions, dental work, etc each year so some months after I've used all in the FSA wont be covered.

Does that make sense? And then I'd just put the money you get back/reimbursed into a rainy day fund or fun money fun (i.e. try a new restaurant fund or something like that). We budget for medical/dental expenses each month and if FSA covers it, great, we have a little extra, if not, we're not surprised when we go over that month.

    Does that make sense?

that does make sense! Thanks for tip on where to put the reimbursed $$. I might put that in our holiday club acct so when the holidays come, we can use that money for gifts (or if we are in a house put it towards a nice household item!)
