Local veggie gardeners or CSA members?

I live in St. Louis (Webster Groves to be exact) and am wondering if anyone reads these boards! Last year was my first year to do a vegetable garden - I have a pretty nice space and my FIL built me a raised bed. I will be giving it another go with some different and some of the same crops. Anyone else in this boat? Interested in sharing seeds, plants or tips?

Also, is anyone a member of a local CSA? I'm thinking of joining this year and would love advice. Thanks!

Re: Local veggie gardeners or CSA members?

  • We did a very small veggie garden last summer (tomatos and peppers), and it turned out very well.  I was hoping to expand it this year, or at least get some more variety, but so far I don't have any definate plans.  What have you/are you planning on growing?

  • Hi all,

My husband and I just moved to the St. Louis Metro area from Chicago and we now have a house with a yard (after years of not having a yard we are absolutely excited)!  We'd like to make some changes in our eating habits and would like to plant a small garden.  Meagan, you said you planted tomatoes and peppers which sound great.  What month did you plant?  We still need to do some work on the yard to make it plant-ready and are trying to figure out our timeline.

  • Last year I did 5 varieties of squash (zucchini, summer squash, and 3 winter squashes), 4 types of tomatoes, peppers, brussels sprouts, strawberries, melon, broccoli, cauliflower and leaf lettuce. I plan on adding beans and peas this year, plus leeks and who knows what? I'm waiting for my seed catalogs. Emmy, I was you last year, new to my own yard! I planted in April I think, though I started seeds in Feb (too early IMO). STL weather is really unpredictable. I waited til the ground warmed up to put things in the ground.

  • My husband and I live in a condo in the city, so no full garden for us yet, but last year we did two Topsy Turvys on our porch that worked wonderfully!  (One grew tomatoes, the other green peppers)  The trick with those is to water water WATER as well as trim back as needed to keep from seeing the size of the veggies shrink.  (Lots of afternoon sun helped too, I believe.)
  • Thanks Ruby!  I've been noticing the weather is unpredictable, especially with the near foot of snow we just got.  We're hoping to prep the yard in March and plant in April, weather pending.
  • It's incredibly unpredictable!  (it gets a lot better after March though).    We planted in Mid April last year and that worked pretty well for us.  I am looking forward to giving it another go.  It is such a great feeling of accomplishment.  We are putting in a flower garden this year too.  Go away winter, I'm ready for Spring!!
