studio apt entertaining

DH & I live in a studio (bedroom is in the loft upstairs though) and would like to have a party but we aren't quite sure how.

When you walk in there is a hallway about 10' long, bathroom along this wall. Then the kitchen  is open to the living space & patio. There is a huge counter that will be great for drinks and food. Go down 2 steps to the living space. On the left we have 3 leaning bookcases & 2 leaning desks on the right is our couch. We plan on moving the coffee table upstairs so its out of the way.

Should we get a few side tables for people to put drinks on even though there is plenty of shelf/desk space? Should we get a few stools for people to sit on (our couch seats 6)?

We'll get a heater for the patio & there are 2 chairs out there.

Any suggestions are welcome! I used to love hosting parties at our old, larger place but I'm not sure how to do it in our new place.

Re: studio apt entertaining

  • And I decided that we can fold up our bed into a couch (its a futon) to get the extra space upstairs! How do we let people know its ok to go up there?
  • If you really want people to be in your bedroom, which might not be necessary or advisable, you could have a sign up there that says VIP Lounge.  Then people will want to check it out and will know they are allowed up there.  You should make it kind of VIP-feeling up there.  Like, bottles of champagne or club lighting or something.  :)

As for the rest of the space, it sounds pretty good to me.  The only thing I might add would be a card table and chairs, if there's room.  It would just create another place for a group to gather and sit.

  • What really matters is the dimensions of your LR.  People aren't going to go upstairs; they're just not.  The first people to arrive will congregate near the kitchen and the later arrivers will want to be near where the party already is, so they'll be in the LR.

I would get stools, kitchen chairs, folding chairs, whatever for people to sit on in your LR.

I find people will set down drinks anywhere they please (including my 1850s sideboard...grrr), so if you put out coasters and napkins, that will help.  I think a couple little tray tables might be a good idea if you have a source and the space.

  • Hi!  I've lived in a couple of really small studio apartments (I used to call it a one room, one woman show...)  I heard somewhere that you can't entertain more people than you can comfortably sit  (not nec. at a table)  If your crowd is young - I would maybe double that number ... and then limit your guest list to those.    Make sure all of your food is finger food too.

GL and please let us know how it goes. :)

  • I think I may have most of the snacks & drinks downstairs but put a little sign saying there are more upstairs. The loft area/upstairs looks down on the living space so its all very open (which we love) and we don't mind having people up there. Plus it means more people can come!

Although this is a "we want work friends to be friends we can do stuff with outside of work" party so we'll see how that goes.

    Thanks for the ideas ladies!
