Tylenol or Motrin for teething?

Ben got most of his 6 teeth before he was old enough for Motrin, so I never really thought about it. ?Of course, #7 started popping through during the middle of the night while we were away for the weekend. ?The poor kid has been chewing and drooling on everything today. ?I gave him some Tylenol earlier and it seemed to help, but I didn't know if Motrin was better at this point...TIA!

Re: Tylenol or Motrin for teething?

  • Motrin lasts longer. I don't think it matters which one you use for teething though. Motrin might be better because ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medicine, so it might help his gums be not so swollen.
  • Sometimes I think that tylenol works better, but motrin works for longer (I hope that made sense).  I'll typically give tylenol during the day and then a dose of motrin before bed if I know that there is teething pain going on.

Thanks, Laura. ?I gave him Motrin tonight, thinking the same thing...?

PS- #8 broke through this evening too...should be a fun night here!?

  • I am a straight up motrin girl when it comes to teething.
  • Motrin is best for teething because of its anti-inflamatory properties, and it also last longer than Tylenol.  Tylenol is stricting just acetamephin (sp?) which is just an anti-pyretic ( fever reducer) and pain.  However because motrin is an NSAID - non steroidal anti-inflamatory drug.. its best for teething, sprains, strains etc.  = )
