Animal related volunteer opportunities?

I know we have several animal lovers on this board.

I'm looking to volunteer, particularly with dogs, but am looking for something that doesn't have a specific time requirement.  The OHS has a requirement of a 3 hour consecutive shift per week to work with the dogs and with my work schedule it's hard to accomplish that unless I am there EVERY weekend.

I know about PAW team which is usually 1 weekend a month but I'm looking for other ideas as well.  and preferably in Portland though I'm open to hearing other ideas.

does anyone know if doggy daycares allow volunteers to assist them?

Re: Animal related volunteer opportunities?

  • I used to volunteer with Family Dogs New Life (SE Portland/Milwaukie area) and they didn't have a time commitment at the time, it was whatever worked for you.  Some people would do a couple hours once a week, some once a month.  I don't know what it's like right now, but you might give them a call.
  • Yay for volunteering!  I LOVE volunteering at the dog daycare.

Your best bet volunteering without an extended time commitment would be HandsOnPortland.org

You can go to their Project Calendar and choose Animal Support under the impact area.

I have to agree, this is a great organization!

  • It's not Portland, but the Humane Society of SW Washington allows you to be a "floater" for both dog-walking and dog socialization/adoption assistance shifts.  They would like an average of 2 hours/week. You can sign up for shifts that fit into your schedule (all done online).  It's located on the east side of Vancouver.
