I went to a Culinary Tourism Conference this week. There is a new group that has formed, the Michigan Culinary Tourism Association, and this is the first time they put on this conference.
One of the sessions I went to each had their own Food Tour groups
Learn Great Foods - http://www.learngreatfoods.com/
She organizes farm tours and then they go to a location and cook with a chef using the products they bought from the different farms. She has tours in the Petoskey/Leenau area. She also does tours in IL and MO/KY region.
Culinary Escapes organizes four hour walking tours in the Detroit area. They go to different places and try small samples. http://culinary-escapes.com/
I have to go through my notes and see what else I wrote down. I know I thought of a few of you during the conference. There is some new website that went live that day and Michigan is the first state to have their own state-wide page. They never gave the website address though. I will have to see what I can find.
Re: Foodies
Another lead

And they have a creamery that does workshops.

I'm so jealous, I really wanted to go to that! Thanks for the notes!
By the way there are food tours in Grand Rapids too. I haven't gone on one yet though.
It was a good conference. I think we may have made a connection with Learn Great Foods for them to do a tour with my work and the surrounding area. We will see if anything comes out of it.
I think the networking was far better than the breakout sessions. I think they needed to beef up their sessions.
I went to one on Marketing Your Food Operations/Tours and they didn't really get into the marketing aspects. I think they really needed to stress on the social medial portion of it including Twitter and Food Blogs. I think there are a lot of "old school" people in the industry, esp in certain regions of the state. I think they could have done a better job in that area. Maybe your blogging group can contact them about doing a session next year.
great idea! Other cities and states are really engaging social media.
