We have a hand-me-down Vicks one that works only sometimes. I'm not sure if I should buy one of the cute ones...frog or elephant...or just go with a standard one.
What do you have? Do you like it?
Re: Recommend your humidifer
We have 2 Holmes humidifiers. They are quiet, easy to refill, and don't get too nasty as long as we don't leave the water just sitting around in there (i.e. keep them running or empty them when they're going to be off for more than 4 hours).
I will say this-- do not get one with filters. Aside from being INSANELY expensive ($15 a pop and they need to be changed often because of the mold), they just seem to collect mold. I am allergic to mold and MH and i had to replace our 2 humidifiers because they had filters and they were making me so sick. The ones without the filters work great without making me ill (which is kind of the whole point, right?).
I went online and checked out user reviews-- on Amazon, Sears, etc. It gave me a good feel for the units I ended up buying (noise vs. ease of use vs. leaking, etc.).
We have this one too, and had the elephant in the past (we would still have the elephant, but in my infinite "getting the house ready for camp" wisdom... I accidentally left water in it all summer... EWWWW)
It seems to work ok, Keaghan did wake up from his nap with a little bloody nose that I can't figure out if it was from a tiny cut he got sticking his finger up there, or from dryness in the house...
Just be careful because humidifiers and vaporizers are really two different things. Like most things, you get what you pay for and you will often have better results with a more expensive, higher end unit (aka not a cute frog one). We've used the stereotypical "I can see the moisture coming out" ones and they leave a white film over everything and can leave a wet area on furniture and flooring if you aren't careful.
A good break down of the different types can be seen here: http://www.essortment.com/lifestyle/differencebaby_sixo.htm
The best solution we ever had was a huge fish tank. As soon as we got rid of it, our house dried out.
Good luck!
