I can't say that I have just one favorite restaurant in Chicago. There's just too many good ones!
Currently here are some of my favorites that we've been revisiting lately-
Girl and the Goat- SO Good! DH says he could eat here everyday if I would let him, and he's not one to like revisiting the same place more than once.
Sapori Trattoria- Italian
David Burke's primehouse -for meat dishes
Frontera Grill or Topolobampo- for mexican dishes
Since you specifically requested Italian here's a couple other ones-
Osteria Via Stato, Italian Village, Fornello Trattoria
Ruth's Chris is a chain you can get in many cities. If you want an awesome steak-try Chicago Cut. It's on LaSalle at the river. It's newish but one of my favorite places.
For Italian, Mia Francesca is great. Italian Village gets crowded with the theater crowds but it is good.

Ready for summer!
I was going to PM you again but thought I would offer a couple suggestions. I am a huge fan of Volare, it is very authentic family owned. Make reservations but still plan a little wait.
I have been going there for years and it is always PACKED and the food never disappoints. They have the best Vodka Sauce around (esp when on chicken parm). If you like the brushetta, it is also a must have. I am craving it now!!!!
