Re: My mom turns 50 this year!!

  • What time in the fall? Trying to determine how warm/cold it would be and if you'd need outdoor heaters.

    Also, what's your budget?

  • I guess the first question is, does SHE want it outside at her house?  Will there be bathrooms inside?  What about rain?

The next step is setting a budget.  That's going to set the tone, time, and food/beverage.

  • It's going to be a Saturday in October.... afternoon....  humm
  • for decor and food, stick with the fall theme. you can do so many clever things no matter what your budget it! pumpkins, hay bails for extra seating, a fire ring, a fall themed birthday invitation.

    i love outdoor parties!

  • I like PPs suggestion of a fall theme.  I'm picturing pumpkins that you spray paint in gold.  Maybe you can carve some out and put candles in them.

Food really depends on how casual or formal you want to make the event.  With that many people outdoors, I think a buffet is probably your best bet.

Maybe you can have a signature drink in your mom's honor.  Something with cranberry juice, perhaps?  Call it the Marytini/Bethtini, using your mom's name of course.

    GL!

  • 2010 was a huge year for big birthdays in my world - both my parents turned 50 and DH turned 30.  With my parents, my sister and I (and our hubbies) had professional pictures taken of us that we blew up to 11x14 and framed and did different things with.  They loved it.  I didn't do a big party, we just celebrated together as family.

But, for DH's 30th bday in May, I went all out with a party at the house.  My menu included all his favorite foods and I decorated with all kinds of balloons and 30 bday themed stuff - I wanted it to be cheesy and one he would always remember.  He was in charge of the guest list and everybody wore nametags that had their name and a picture of DH on it that said "what I love about DH _____".  It was hilarious.  I made a basket where people put their favorite memories with DH and we read them off.  I had pictures of DH with different buddies of his at the party, in different places.  And we had a "DH Trivia" where the winner got a giftcard to his favorite burrito place in town.  He loved it and it was super easy.
